What is a response paper?

Response papers vary from course to course, depending on the course goals. For this
course, the goals of the response papers are to analyze and weigh the argument(s) put
forth by the authors. In analyzing the authors arguments, you need to deeply engage
with the texts, asking questions such as the following (dont go through these questions
mechanically):
-
-
-
-
-
-

What evidence does the author marshal to support the argument?

Is the argument rhetorically persuasive?
Why you do or do not find it persuasive?
What other types of evidence would make the argument more compelling?
What issues did you think the author should have raised?
What issues seems extraneous?

This is NOT an opinion piece. By that I mean the purpose is not to focus on whether you
agree or disagree but to analyze carefully what the author is trying to do.
Your response papers should be no more than 400-450 words, that is about 1.5 double
space pages. They should be turned in to me in hard copy at the end of class.
