Introduction
Those of you who knew Dr Kevin Conway CBE well will know he believed that the performance of all students
of equal abilities, as measured by their incoming GCSE scores, in post 16 A level, AS level and BTEC national
qualifications, can and should achieve minimum standards irrespective of gender, creed, colour or socioeconomic background. In the late 1980s when he set out on the Alps journey, with his staff, he considered
how daft it seemed that a provider should expect different A level outcomes from three students, all of whom
achieved say, 4 B and 4 C grades at GCSE, just because one was a white female from an advantaged background,
one was a black male and one was a male with an Asian background from a disadvantaged background.
This is all about expectations. From the Alps point of view, we tell these students on the second day of their
course that we will have failed them and them us if they do not achieve at least CCD at A level. What Kevin and
his staff then did was monitor each individual student closely to ensure that their performance did not drop
below this level, formally, in November, March and June each year, and informally in between where necessary.
The net effect of this is that we see little difference in A level scores on average between females and males,
and between students of different ethnic origins or social background where such an ethos governs. The vast
majority of students at Kevins college achieved their target grades and many actually improved on grades
set because of the Alps systems he had in place.
We provide gender, ethnicity and pupil premium reports as an extra level of analysis. But we would hope
that these will be used in the way described here, and not to stereotype the performance of different groups.
Each of these reports compares the different groups of students, however defined, to the performance of the
whole cohort using the national benchmarks. This will enable schools and colleges to monitor how well they
are addressing the national agenda of closing the gap.
These Alps gender, ethnicity and pupil premium reports can enable schools and colleges to analyse value
added performance of the groups of students they ask us for male vs female etc. One of the uses of the reports
will be to inform self assessment reports or school evaluation forms. They also provide contextual value added
data for use in Ofsted inspections and to fulfil government requirements. The pupil premium analysis in this
report is based on how your organisation has defined the group of students. This is perfectly valid as the report
does not compare to a pupil premium standard for reasons outlined above. For simplicity, the term pupil
premium is used throughout the report. Readers should be aware of the actual definition of pupil premium
in terms of Ever6 FSM, or just FSM.
The reports explore performance in the various ways which are familiar to those of you already using
Alps reports. The reports allow you to explore interesting questions; are students making similar progress
in all subjects and at all levels? Are male and female students making similar progress in all subjects?
Are there differences in achievement between ethnic minority groups? Are the differences in progress made
by pupil premium and non-pupil premium students related to prior attainment? Are we closing the attainment
gap? Are ethnic minority students over/under-represented in a particular subject?
The answers to such questions allow you to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses and to develop
a purposeful agenda for quality improvement.

RED means your performance matches the top 25% of the AS level benchmark for the indicator.
BLUE means your performance matches the bottom 25% of the AS level benchmark for the indicator.

The challenge is to get out of the BLUE and move towards the RED. If you are already
in the RED the challenge is to stay there. Continuous improvement is the underlying theme.
5. For each indicator we provide summary descriptions. Full explanations of benchmarks, target grades
and indicators can be found in your Alps AS level report.

This indicator shows overall performance by measuring all student outcomes across their programme
and comparing this to their prior attainment at GCSE. This measurement takes into account the performance
of students and also the number of AS levels that they attain.

These tables allow a direct comparison of the performance in each band of students by pupil
premium compared to all students in the same band.
Only students taking 2 or more AS levels are included in these tables.
The target scores in each table reflect the 75th percentile performance in the Alps benchmark
for that band.

Year columns: Identifies the year to which the results in this column relate.
Column 1 Student entries: Shows the number of students who completed the course in the subject.
Column 2 Value added score: This is a measure of the comparison between the actual UCAS points scored by the
subject year group and the expected score using the 75th percentile scores for the basket of all subjects. The higher
this is, the better, and generally scores of 1.00 or above are more than satisfactory, although a score of 1.00 in one
subject does not equate to a score of 1.00 in another. Each subject has its own thermometer scale. For example,
a value added score of 1.00 in mathematics will achieve an Alps grade 3, whereas in sociology a value added score
of 1.00 will achieve an Alps grade 5.
Column 3 Subject grade: A subject grade from 1 to 9 is assigned to each subject value added score.
The subject grades have been calculated by looking at the performance of large sets of students in the dataset
taking the particular subject.
Grade 1 is given to a provider that achieves a higher value added score in a subject than any of the providers
in the Alps national benchmark dataset obtained in the same subject.
Grade 5 is given to a provider that achieves a value added score in a subject that is close to the performance
of the middle ranking performer in the benchmark set of 2,549 providers.
Grade 9 is given to a provider that achieves a lower value added score in a subject than any of the providers
in the benchmark dataset obtained in the same subject.
Subject grades are comparable between subjects. A grade 3 in mathematics is an equivalent departmental
performance to a grade 3 in art nationally even though the raw value added score can be significantly different.
Subject grades are colour coded:
Results above the 75% benchmark are highlighted in red and show outstanding to excellent achievement.
Results between the 25% and 75% benchmark are highlighted in black. This indicates very good to below average achievement.
Results below the 25% benchmark are highlighted in blue. This indicates relatively weak performance.

1.
This report is useful in indicating how students in a year group fared in attempting to reach the
aspirational Alps targets.
2.
Students are ranked by initial GCSE score in this table, running from 8.0 (58.0 points) straight A*
grades to the lowest GCSE score in the year group, usually around 4.0 (34.0) (4/5 grades of C and 4/5
grades of D at GCSE) in a comprehensive AS level intake by national standards.
3.
There is one line per student. Each line shows the number of subjects per student, the AS level
subjects taken and grades they achieved. AS level General Studies and EPQ are not included.
4.
Alps AS level targets - The Alps AS level target grades are set out below. These are based on the
Alps AS level benchmarks:

Where a grade meets or exceeds the target grade, the grade is coloured RED. Where the grade is one
grade lower than the target grade, the grade is coloured GREY. Where the grade achieved is two or
more grades down it is coloured BLUE. The aspirational objective is to try and move to all RED pages.
6.
Number of exams taken - The fourth column on the table is called No. Exams. This column shows
the number of AS levels that each student has taken. The target number of subjects for different ability
students is:

If a student hits their target number of subjects the No. Exams column is coloured RED.
If a student misses their target number of subjects the No. Exams column is coloured BLUE.
7.
RED students - Students who have achieved both the target number of subjects and also the target
grades in their subjects are termed Alps RED students and their identifier is coloured RED.
8.
RED student % thermometer - At the top of the Student Performance Table the % of students that
are Alps RED students is shown. We have calculated this value for all schools and colleges in the Alps
benchmark and these results are shown on the RED student % thermometer. This gives an indication
of how many of your students were Alps RED students compared to national performance.
