love their babies.
Language Objectives: Students will read books. They will talk about animal names, and they will
write a reflection of this book.
Materials: Book - Animal Babies (Wexo, 2001), pictures of animals, note cards, pencils.

Building Background

I introduce the lesson to them Yesterday we learned about the dinosaurs that are animals in the
past. Today, we are going to talk about animals in our lives. These animals we can meet in our
garden, zoo, or in the forest. To review the old knowledge, I can ask them Can anyone name
some of your favorite dinosaurs? I can ask them what food of dinosaurs ate, where we could see
the dinosaur now, and why we cannot meet them in the real world.

Presentation
I will ask them to look at pictures of the book in 5 minutes. I will write new vocabularies on the
word wall, and explain the meaning of the words. I will use pictures of animals as a scaffolding to
some ELLs. Then I will read the book, and explain what happens in this story. I will show them a
short video clip of birds and deer which are feeding their babies.
For discussion, I will arrange students in small groups of three or four. I will ensure each group
has at least one native English student who can help their peers in the discussion. I will guide
them talk something about the animals which they know in their countries. What are the names of
their babies in English and their own language? For example in Vietnamese buffalo is tru and
baby buffalo is ngh How do the parents feed their babies? While they are discussion, I will go
around and assist them in their expression.

Practice
On the board I create two columns parent and babies. I read name of animal in the book one
each a time and ask them vote whether it is a parent or baby. They can show two fingers as a
parent and one finger as a baby.

Review/ Assessment
To assess the students learning, I tell the name and the picture of baby animal and ask them tell
the name of parent animal.
Finally, I give each of them a note card and have them write the name of a favorite animal which
can be a gift in their birthday.

Homework
For homework to night, I ask them read the book with their parents, their brothers, sisters, or a
Teddy bear and show them lovely pictures of babies animals. They can ask their partners what
baby animal they love.
