Write a brief, yet concise, description of what occurs in this lesson (50
words).
What will students learn during the lesson? In this lesson, the students
will learn..

In this lesson, students will learn how to identify the characters and key details
in a story. By using the Character Scrapbook by Scholastic, students will read a
story with a partner and then recreate the main character out of the book on
the computer with the same partner. The task will be printed and published as
a Character Creations Class Book. The students will demonstrate
comprehension by listing facts and information about the story and the main
character as well as illustrating the main character.

Instructional
Objectives

Clear, Specific, and Measurable NOT ACTIVITIES. Student-friendly.

The objective for this lesson [learning outcome] should identify

the A, B, C & D.

Students will demonstrate their knowledge and comprehension of the

chosen story by re-creating the main character.
Students will be able to cite text specific details and information from
their chosen story.

Prior
Knowledge

What prior knowledge will the students have to have to be able to do

this lesson? You might look at the year before state standards to see
what they were suppose to learn before doing the state standard you
chose.

Students will need to have basic computer skills and

understanding of sentence structure as well as basic
knowledge of spelling, reading, and colors.
Need or
Purpose

Why do students need to learn this lesson?

Identifying main characters and key details in a story is not only a

state standard, but also essential to comprehension and
understanding of a story. Considering the spiraling curriculum,
students must understand this concept at grade 1 so grade 2
reading skills can go smoothly and as planned.
Teacher
Preparation

Explain what the teacher has to do to get ready for the lesson including
activities such as gather materials, bookmark websites, create research
guides, schedule labs, gather parent permission for fieldtrips, etc

The teacher must prepare a book selection for the students to choose from for their
project. The teacher must have the student computers functioning properly. The
teacher must create a link to the webpage being used for instruction on the desktop
so the students can easily access it with one simple click. The teacher must have
printer paper prepared for a smooth and easy process of printing the students work.
Explain what the students do in this lesson that puts them in an active
Active
learning situation.
Participation
The students will be split into pairs and each pair will choose a book from the
teacher provided selection. Each pair will read their book and when they are
finished, they will go to their assigned classroom computer. The students will
then click the link the teacher created on their home screen. Finally, the
students will create, on their computers (and still in pairs), an illustration of
the main character and provide facts and information about the main
character and the story.

Formative
Assessment

The criteria should directly align with the instructional objectives and
standards. How will you monitor student progress? Also describe your
plan for providing feedback to your students during the lesson?

During the partner portion of the lesson, students will be monitored by the
teacher. If students are struggling, the teacher will provide further
explanation.
Materials

List all materials and include how each will be used during the lesson.
Must align with the Instructional Objective

Classroom Computers (enough for partner work)

Book (provided by teacher, student choice)

Instructional Procedures
An Essential Question encourages students to put forth more effort
Essential
when faced with complex, open-ended, challenging, meaningful and
Question
authentic questions.

What is a character in a story? Who is the main character? What are the
important facts and details for the story?
Lesson set

Motivator/Hook - How will you open the lesson to motivate the

students? How will you relate this lesson to previous learning & to real
life experiences, to explain the importance of the learning to the
students? (student involvement required)

Show students a video clip and ask them, What was that video clip about?,
Who was the main character?, and have them name some other
characters. Then, relate a movie or video clip to books and explain that every
story must have main characters and the importance of a story line.
Techniques &
Activities

List the instructional procedures step-by-step, in sequential order as

they occur in the lesson. What will you do? What will the students do?
How will you keep learners engaged? Within the procedures a variety
of classroom teaching strategies (methods) are identified.
Student centered activities are included as well as guided
practice of the learning is included.

Write the following literary terms on the board: character, plot, setting,
and theme. Define each of these terms. Be sure students understand
that a character is a person or an animal in literature. Briefly describe
the plot, setting, and major themes for the book your class is currently
reading.
I will then assign the students into pairs.
The students will choose a book from the teacher provided selection.
Each pair will read their book and when they are finished, they will go
to their assigned classroom computer. The students will then click the
link the teacher created on their home screen.
Finally, the students will create, on their computers (and still in pairs),
an illustration of the main character and provide facts and information
about the main character and the story.
Their scrapbook pages will be printed and together; they will make a
class Character Creations Book.
Each pair will be graded based upon accuracy and completion.

Extension

How will I provide modified instructions for gifted students? I call this
Gear-up. Extensions are additional activities to expand the learning on
the lesson. If students finish early what will the supplemental activity
be? - I will have them do.

For students who complete the assignment with ease,

correctly, and with ample time for additional work, they will
be asked to draw and color the main setting of the book on
a blank sheet of paper.
Remediation

How will I provide modified instructions for below average? I call this
- gear-down. Remediation activities include methods to re-teach the
learning for students who need more instruction. If a student falls
behind I will ..

These students will be intentionally placed in a pair with a

gifted student. When monitoring the room, these students
will receive a slight extra student-teacher dialogue. If a
student falls behind, I will give them extra help.
Adaptions
Modifications

How will I provide modified instruction for special education? How will
you adapt the learning for learners with special needs? Choose one
disability and tell me how you would adapt this lesson for that
disability.

The ELL student will be given a printed Spanish list and the assistant will work with her making sure she
understands the assignment and tasks.

CLOSURE

Reflection / Wrap-Up. How will you close the lesson, summarize the
lesson content, relate the lesson to future lessons & tie it to previous
lessons? (student-involvement required). How will I review subjectmatter and purpose with students?

This lesson will close by the teacher showing each pairs scrapbook task on
the Promithean board for the class to view. The teacher will then show the
students the completed class book and provide a personal copy for each
student to take home to their parents. I will explain that the assignment was
for us to learn and identify main characters as well as key details and relate
that to the importance of each in story structure as well as remind the
students that when writing a story, these components are necessary.
Summative
Assessment

Describe the assessment process that you will use to measure whether
the students achieved the instructional objectives. How will you assess
the student performance/mastery of skill? What are the criteria for
achievement, and performance level? How will you assess that students
have learned? How will you monitor student progress? The criteria
should directly align to the instructional objectives and standards. Also
describe your plan for providing feedback to your students.

The scrapbook pages the students create with their partners will be printed
out and graded based upon accuracy and completion.

Does the character on the student work match the description of the
character in the book?
Did the students choose the main character correctly?
Are the facts and information accurate with the story?
Based upon material covered thus far, sentence structure and grammar
will be graded.
Did the students complete the entire project?

NOTES:
This lesson is designed for a classroom that has classroom computers. If you
do not have classroom computers, it is necessary that the computer lab or
library be scheduled for this lesson.
I obtained my idea for this lesson on a Pinterest board and here is the link to
the webpage I found: http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lessonplan/character-scrapbook-teachers-guide
**I majorly modified the lesson, however, the original idea is not my own.
