WELCOME TO THE 2015/2016


ACADEMIC YEAR!
This letter is to inform you of the policies
and procedures of Mrs. Hansens English
classroom and to allow you to make
informed decisions regarding your childs
academic future.

What I expect my students to bring

In my classroom, I expect all members of


the class to abide by the five following
expectations for behavior:
1. Follow directions
2. Raise your hand
3. Stay seated unless you have
permission

Homework
Independent homework is assigned on
each Tuesday and due the following
Tuesday. This is to allow students to fit
their English work into schedules that are
already full of other activities and
obligations. Assignments will including
reading comprehension and independent
writing. ALL assignments are
completed in LA OneNote Class
Notebooks.
Reading is a daily homework
expectation. Students are required to
read 2.5 hours a week. This reading may
be done online, through MyON, or a
printed book. Reading logs must be
filled out for daily reading and are
checked each Friday during library.

Late/Missing Assignments

Students are responsible for checking their


LA OneNote Notebook for missing work
when absent from school. Late work is
accepted. Students will be notified of any
missing assignments or exams several
times throughout each trimester.

Consequences depend on the severity of


the behavior, but may include:
teacher/student conferences, behavior
plans, or infractions and detentions with
parental notice.

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS
All eighth graders must meet three
requirements in English in order to
be eligible for promotion at the end
of the school year.
1. Earn 3 grade points in the course
of the year; D- or better in the third
trimester. Any student with an F in
the third trimester will not be
promoted.

Technology in the Classroom


We run a paperless classroom. All
directions, reading, exams, homework,
and notes are delivered, completed,
submitted, and scored through your
childs LA OneNote Class Notebook.
Students can earn 10 points each
school day for bringing a
charged/functional device to class.
Accommodations are made for
students whose devices are in need of
repair/malfunctioning.

2. Pass two writing proficiencies out


of the three that are given.
Writing Alternative: Have an
adequate amount of writing saved in
their writing portfolios to show
growth throughout the school year.
Writing portfolio assignments come
from English homework. A student
must earn a C- or better in the third
trimester to be eligible for this
alternative.

3. Earn 1000 points or more on the


SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory),
which tests the reading and
comprehension abilities of a student.
Reading Alternative: Earn 160
points in Reading Counts (55 per
trimester) and earn a C- or better in
the third trimester. A student must
earn 165 points for the school year to
be considered as fulfilling this
alternative.
