Measuring the Act of Intelligence
The measure of intelligence is the ability to change, stated theoretical physicist, Albert
Einstein. There are many ways intelligence is considered to be measured, but the main way is
through knowledge and information. Intelligence is determined by someones ability to be able
to obtain information and knowledge and apply it in anyway. Somebodys obtained knowledge
and information can be applied through their Intelligent Quotation (IQ), creativity and Emotional
Intelligent Quotation (EIQ). To be considered smart, an individual has to have a great deal of
academic knowledge.
One way to decide if someone is smart is to determine how high an individuals
Intelligent Quotation (IQ) is. In BBCs documentary Battle of the Brains, according to Vivian
Hall, a psychologist at the University of London, the IQ test measures someones overall
academic knowledge. Academic knowledge is obtained information applied through the IQ test,
which is scored. This test proves that determining the intelligence of someone is considered in
how high their score or IQ is. In Daniel Keys short story, Flowers for Algernon, Charlie, the
main characters IQ was increased by how his grammar throughout his progress reports
improved. The operation that Charlie took place in, increased his IQ, which was proven from his
grammar, which is a part of academic knowledge. This information shows that someone with a
high IQ, is considered smart, because before his operation, Charlie's grammar was worse. A high

Intelligent Quotation is one way to determine intelligence, also with the aspect of applying
knowledge to situations.
Creativity is another way individuals apply knowledge to situations. In BBCs
documentary Battle of the Brains, Robert Sternberg, a professor at Tufts University, states that
creativity is the key to knowledge. Sternbergs statement also contributes to the thought that
obtained knowledge is applied through creativity, proving intelligence. In the short story by
Daniel Keys, Flowers for Algernon, Charlie was able to see pictures in the Rorschach Test
after his operation, but was not able to see pictures before. The operation Charlie was in
increased his ability to see pictures in the ink blots, testing his creative ability. The fact that
Charlie became more creative after his operation, proves that this trait is another aspect in
determining if an individual is smart. Creativity is an additional way to consider if someone is
smart, with the last idea in applying knowledge with real people.
Emotional Intelligence Quotation (EIQ) is that last way intelligence can be applied,
determining if someone is smart. According to Rex Jung, the professor of the MIND institute, in
BBCs documentary Battle of the Brains, he states that emotional intelligence is just as
important as the intelligence that is used to take a test, or someones IQ. Rex Jungs statement
proves that EIQ is just as important as IQ, which both determine if an individual is intelligent.
Another example is in Daniel Keys short story, Flowers for Algernon, when Charlie realized
that people used to make fun of him and his disabilities. This occurred after his operation, but
before it, he could not read people reacting to him. Charlie's operation, as what was said before,
increased his intelligence, which was shown through him being able to read other peoples
reactions compared to before. This change in him being able to read other peoples reactions,

proves that EIQ is a part in determining is someone is clever. Therefore, someones EIQ is the last
way intelligence is determined in an individual.
In conclusion, being able to apply obtained information or knowledge determines if
someone is smart. To repeat, a high Intelligence Quotation (IQ) proves that someone is
intelligent. In addition, using creativity to apply knowledge to situations also shows an individual
is smart. Again, when someone has a high Emotional Intelligence Quotation (EIQ), they are
considered to be smart. To conclude, whether to determine if someone is smart is measured i
many ways like the ability to change, but mostly through knowledge and information.
