Sore throat audit

(Adapted from RCGP Audit Toolkits)


Aim : To evaluate antibiotic prescribing for Sore Throat symptoms
against the NICE clinical guideline 69
Nice Guideline suggests
Patients with 1 or none of the Centor criteria
No antibiotic or delayed antibiotic prescription is an option.
Patients with 2 criteria - testing, including rapid antigen tests
Centor score 3/4 - 2 or 3-day delayed or immediate antibiotics or rapid
antigen test
Antibiotic choice (National Antibiotic guideline Malaysia)
Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250-500mg PO q8h for 10 days or Amoxicillin
OR (in penicillin allergic patients) EES 400mg PO q12h for 10 days for
Target: 100% compliance to NICE guideline for patients with 1 or
none of centors criteria No antibiotic/ delayed antibiotic
100% compliance to NICE guideline for patients with more than 2
criteria fulfilled

Analysis
1. How many percentage achieved target?
Use total centor score, ignore the components of it.
For example :
How many prescribed antibiotic when total score was 0 or 1 etc
2. Among those achieved target, classify according to GPs age group
and location
3. Among those who prescribed antibiotic, percentage of those
followed antibiotic in guideline? Penicillin/ Amoxicillin/
Erythromycin

4. How many Rapid Antigen test was performed, location of GP(During


presentation ask students involved, how the GP decided to order for
rapid antigen/ throat swab)
5. Common antibiotic prescribed Table form/ graph
6. Why target cant be reached? Identify barriers
7. Steps to overcome barriers
