Experiment 10: Isomerization of an Alkene

SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM
Assemble the reflux set-up

Dissolve 1.0 g maleic acid

inside the pear-shaped flask
with 1.50 mL distilled water.

. Add 1.25 mL concentrated

HCl to the solution.

Dry the solid and determine its

weight. Compute for the
percentage yield.

Cool down the solution and

filter using Buchner funnel.

Reflux the mixture under

moderate flame for 30-45
mins. A precipitate should
separate from the hot solution.

Get a portion of the dried

product and determine its
melting point.

Record observations and

results of the computation.
