Laboratory Activity No. : 15

Date Performed: April

OBJECTIVES

Demodulation of a binary FSK signal

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

TIMS301

Digital Multimeter

Connectors

Digital Oscilloscope

Adder
Audio Oscillator

Dual Analog Switch

Sequence Generator
VCO
Utilities
Tuneable LPF
Bit Clock Regeneration

PROCEDURE

Note: Make sure that all instruments to be used are properly connected
and in good working conditions, e.g. all probes should be checked for
connectivity to avoid errors.

1. To generate the incoming FSK a suitable transmitter is described in the

Lab Sheet entitled FSK-generation. Figure 2 shows a block diagram, and
the TIMS model.
2. The demodulator of figure 1 is shown modelled in figure 3. This is an
asynchronous demodulator model.
3. Make necessary adjustment and observe the output waveform.

ANALYSIS and CONCLUSION:

In this experiment only the asynchronous demodulator is examined

although we have different methods of demodulating FSK, synchronous or
asynchronous. In asynchronous demodulator, the FSK signal has been
separated into two parts by bandpass filters and then tuned to mark and
space frequencies. The output from each BPF looks like an amplitude shift
keyed signal or ASK signal. We can now demodulate this asynchronously
using the envelope.

What we perform in this experiment is that we demodulate the FSK signal

by converting it first to ASK signal that is why it is called asynchronous. In
a synchronous receiver, we are required to have two local carriers, locked
to mark and space frequencies. Therefore this requires two voltage
controlled oscillator and related modules which is limited in the laboratory.
Also we could also use the Phase Locked loop or PLL demodulator to
recover the FSK signal.
