JimNashstoodatthehelmoftheWWIIeraaircraftcarrier,
TheIntrepid.
Withthe
responsibilityofover4,000crewmen,Jimguidedthemassiveship.Jimwasonly25yearsold.
HewasanExplosiveOrdnanceDisposalofficer,alsoknownasanE.O.D.officer,which
involvedmanyskillssuchasunderwaterswimming,divingwithexplosives,demolition
underwateranddisarmingbombs,minesandmissiles.Hejoinedthenavyin1961.Beingforced
intothemilitarybythedraft,Jimdecidedtojointhenavylikehisfather.

Jimjoinedthenavybecauseofthedraft.Hewouldhavejoinedanotherpartofthe
militarybranchbuthewasmorefamiliarwiththenavybecauseofhisfather.Hefeltthatbeingin
thenavywouldbemorebeneficialthanbeinginthearmy.Alsothenavyhadamoreluxurious
lifestyle,havingbetterfoodandanicebedtosleepin.HisjobasanExplosiveOrdnance
DisposalOfficeralsopaidathirdmorethanaregularofficer.Itsoundedlikeitthatwouldbea
veryexcitingtypeofjob.

WhenJimfirstjoinedthenavyin1961hewenttoO.C.S.,OfficerCandidateschool.He
wascommissionedasanensignwhichisthelowestofficerrankavailable.Whilehewasat
O.C.S.acoupleofrecruitersfromExplosiveOrdnanceDisposalschoolinIndianHead,
Marylandgaveapresentationtotheschool.Jimlikedthepresentationanddecidedtoenrollin
thatschool.Hereceivedhazardousdutypay,whichpaidathirdmorethanwhathewould
havebeenmaking.

Well,whenIwentthroughO.C.S,thatwasveryrigorous.Thatwasallday.Notimeto
takeabreak.ForfourmonthsJimtrainedatOfficerCandidateSchool.Jimhadalmostnotime
tohimself.Itwashoursofstudyingnavigation,engineering,seamanshipandleadership.
Disciplinewasabigpartoftrainingtoo.Alotofpeople,abouthalfdon'tmakeityouknow,you
gottareallyfightandbedeterminednottogiveup.WhenJimfinallygraduatedO.C.S.hewent
ontoE.O.D.S.forayearandahalf.AfterthathewenttounderwaterswimschoolinKeyWest,
Floridatobecomeadeepseadiver.Herehelearnedmanythingssuchasopencircuitand
closedcircuit.Closedmeaningyoudontreleaseanybubblesandopenmeaningbubblesare
released.Closedisforgoingaboutundetected.Thisalsoinvolvedbeingingoodphysical
shape.Itwasveryverystrenuousfromaphysicalstandpoint..AfterJimcompletedE.O.D.She
spentayearattheNavalPropellerplantjustsouthofWashingtonD.C.Thisiswheretheymade
solidrocketpropellentandnitroglycerin.Here,Jimwentthrougheverythingfromnuclear
weaponstoimprovisedboobytraps,torpedoes,watermines,landmines,guidedmissilesand
ICBMs.Weweretaughttodisposeofallthosewarheads.

JimwasassignedtotheUSS
Intrepid
,whichisaWWIIstyleaircraftcarrier.Hisprimary
jobwasanexplosiveordnancedisposalofficerandhissecondaryjobwastorunallthe
ordnanceonboardtheshipandbecometheship'sgunnermaintainingallofthesmallarms,
weapons,pistolsandrifles.Also,Jimwasabletodrivetheshipwhenitwasnthavingflight
operations.

AfteracoupleofyearsJimwentbacktotheschoolandwasassignedasaninstructor
andhestartedinstructinginnuclearweapons.Bythetimeheleft,hewaspromotedtobein
chargeofthenuclearweaponsdisposalschool,thelargestcollectionofnuclearweapontraining
devicesintheworld.AlsoJimlearnedhowtoflyairplanesandbecameapilotwhileatthe
school.Heresignedasalieutenantand6monthslaterhejoinedthereservesfor15years.After
20yearsinthemilitaryJimretiredasacommander.

Ienjoyedmytimeinthemilitaryverymuch!InfactiswhenIdidresignandgointo
civilianlifeIwasprettymuchofalossbecauseyouhavesomuchauthorityandresponsibility
asayoungman.Iwastwentyfiveyearsoldanddrivinganaircraftcarrier!Youknowthatyou
don'tgetthatincivilianlife.JimretiredfromthereservesanddecidedtoworkforMorgan
Stanleyasaninvestmentperson.Hetaughtstockbrokershowtosellinitialpublicofferings
whenacompanygoespublic.Jimwentaroundthecountrydoingthissohetraveledalotduring
hisjob.

JimcontinueshisserviceontheUSSMidway,relayinghisexperienceinthenavytothe
manyvisitors.
