A Long History of Diversity:
1. In a paragraph, explain how the early history [prior to 1000 AD] was highly diversified.
Many different regions had influences on Southeast Asia, but they stayed on their own
path. The two main ideas or factors in creating Southeast Asia were by the help of India
and China. These two countries influenced the spread of Hinduism and Buddhism
throughout Southeast Asia. Asia ended up becoming very diverse and welcomed different
cultures.
2. How was the area of Southeast Asia organized and governed during their early history?
Southeast to begin did not have borders, they had what it called mandalas which are
states that have certain amount of power of the region.
3. How did this change from 1300-1800? There was a trade done within the regions and it
was one of the most important events in Asias history because it brought their economy
together.
Colonialism and its aftermath
1. What is colonialism? Europeans came to Southeast Asia to try and get rich. This
sparked many future new rules to prevent such behavior.

What was the only country in the region that wasnt a colony? Siam was an
independent state.

3. Identify and explain the three ways colonialism changed Southeast Asia. Three ways
were: More rules, centralized government was set up, and people received a westernized
education.

Dutch New Guina.
5. What changes came to Southeast Asia during WWII? Japan arrived and would explore
for resources.
6. How was control of the area in Southeast Asia by Japan different than European
control? Leadership positions differed.

7. After WWII, Southeast Asia gained their independence differently. Briefly explain
this statement with examples. There were many nations that were able to get their
freedom peacefully but others had to fight for it like Indonesia.
An Uneven Economy
1. Southeast Asia has a traditional economy. Explain that statement with specific
examples to back it up. Since there is a lack of industry, they depend on crops because
of the lack of soil.
2. What is ASEAN? How has it helped to create a region within a region? - Association of
South East Asia Nations that promote growth within the region.
A Rich Mosaic of Culture
1. How is this area a mosaic of religions? Identify the different religions and where they
are practiced. It is a mosaic because many religions like Christianity are practiced in
the Philippines.
2. Are there more rural or urban communities in this area? There are more urban
cities.
3. Interpret the picture of page 709. What does this scene show about diversity in
Malaysia? It shows how different people are interconnected through religion and their
unique traditions.

1. Identify these terms and explain their importance in the region:

d. Subsistence activities Activities for the better of the family

f. Taro A major crop that can be used for bread and pudding. It can also be eaten by
itself
2. What type of migration is happening within Oceania today? Rapid urban growth is
currently taking place.
3. How did contact with Europeans and Americans affect the societies of the Pacific Islands?
The traditional roots were taken over by western ways.
4. What is distinctive about Oceania in terms of its languages? It has many different
languages, in fact the most in the world, over 1000.

5. How has modern technology both helped and harmed Oceania? It has helped connect all of
the islands together, but it is taking people away from their traditional roots.

1. What prevents Australia from benefiting completely from its mining industry? It is too
expensive to build the buildings necessary to mine.
2. What historic actions demonstrated New Zealanders concern for equal rights and social
welfare? They granted to ability for women to vote when of the legal age, they also gave
pensions to seniors.
3. What is the major activity conducted in Antarctica? Many things they do are mining,
product wool, and more.
