Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.
For example

Finance:
Sources of finance

Type

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/
can be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and
sound engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets
or studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

List of all items that need detailing

You can either create your own table or upload this one to Weebly and
complete. Either ay, a table like the one below needs to be used.
Finance:
Sources of
finance

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
Making sure that everything is financed is important as without it a
production couldnt happen. they need to make sure they have
acquired the right equipment so they have stuff that can make the
production to a high standard and that its financed properly.
Transport is important so you can get round otherwise the
production would be shit as It would be all shot at one location. its
important to hire good talent as it means the production would be
completed quicker as there professional and know what there doing.
Its Important to hire a good crew so production goes smoothly with
all the right stuff being done at each time. its Important to get the
right materials and make sure there all paid for as its important to
get them so the productions and works and makes sense you
havent just got a load of random items they need to be the right
ones. hiring a facility is important as it better to try film In a variety
of place and not just one hiring a facility means that what ever you
are filming It means it cant be stopped for being illigel or pissing off
the public

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)

Importance
Dead line are important as it means that if they arent met Its going
to make everthing take longer thats going to cost them more
money as there gong to need everything for longer so its going to
cost them more in fees for hiring things as they have to keep them
longer. this will also set back the people further down the line as
they would need the film filming on the deadline day so they can
meet there deadline. also If the deadline Isnt met they might not be
able to finish the production as the availability of equipment may
not be there anymore it might have left and not be avaliable for a
long period of time so the produtction wouldnt be finished or at
least not to the standard they want

Sourcing

Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
Its important to make sure you have all the production equipment
needed as it means the video will be to a high standard. it needs the
right cameras, lighting equipment and sound recording equipment.
If you forget one of these items the final video wont be very good
so you need to make sure all production equipment is present. you
also need to have a post-production house that will have editing
equipment to finish the production. you will need like a sound booth
and the right editing equipment to make the final outcome very
professional and they will also need the facility to do special effects.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material because its your own ideas
its not coping someone else's idea its your own and original it
means it could have a better effect as no ones does it so they will
want to see it i think
Archive material would be used because if you cant get a certain
clip then you would find it online or somewhere so you have it for
the video. its the same as looking through photo libraries and
sound libraries to get photos and sounds for the video you making if
you cant get them
The internet Is import as you use it to do research so you can get
ideas and information so the research is done well It means you can
just look up what ever you need also you can find other sources for
the video you are making
Costumes are important as they make the production more fun as if
everyone was just wearing there own clothes it would be boring and
shit so they wear costumes to there not wearing there normal
clothes its something different.
Scripts are important as it makes a production flow as everyone
know whats going on at each time they can follow It through so
everyone knows what theyre doing and no be confused unless they
cant read then there screwed. it also means 2 people can go
through a thing with them both knowing what to do not just
improvising and making It all up.
Interviews are important for if your doing a factual video or
documentaries and you need a Interview with a certain person and
you cant interview them then there are interview availiable online to
download so there can be a Interview with a certain person In your
production

productions can be found at

Locations:

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
location recces are important as its gives you a idea of where a
production i going to take place and everything about the location
such as lighting sound power supplies risk assessment. thes also let
people reading them know where a place is and the best way to get
there and also the costs. if its out side what the weather could be
like if theres shelter so thing thats dangerous in the rain. in also
will show what accesses points there are for what they are able to
get In and out a location

Sourcing

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
If you dont have location permission then when you are filming you
may get kicked out or arrested for trespassing to you need to make
sure you get permission first
you need to make sure you have clearances so you dont get done
In trouble for using someone's music you make sure to get the right
clearances first.
if your making a film you need to make sure that you dont break
the copy right law so you need to make sure Its a original idea so
you dont get done for copyright cause if you do then you can get
fined or jailed

health and safety is important other wise someone could get hurt
and sue you for not having it safe before starting production
you need Insurance to cover you for if anything happens then you
get get sued for to much the insurance company will cover the
problem and try to sort it out
