Students will:
Be able to understand what an ESL student is and the
issues that may be presented to that student,
classmates, and teacher.
Be able to apply effective measures for dealing with
and immersing ESL students into a classroom through
inclusion and differentiation.
Assessing through group discussion following the
scenario exercise
Assessing their definition of ESL and strategies for
immersion of ESL students through discussion and the
poster

Popsicle sticks

A brief introduction to our topic and itinerary


Using the popsicle sticks we will split the students into
three groups of six
Within their groups they will write a definition of what
ESL is on the top 1/3 of the poster paper at their table
We will as a group give a brief definition to what ESL is
and some additional factors

In the same groups assigned in the previous activity


they will be given a scenario and a resource assigned
to the particular group (either a Youtube video or
printout) and the person with the next birthday will
read the scenario to the group and the person with the
longest last name will record answers on the remaining
2/3 for the two questions on the poster paper
The students will now take five giant steps to a fellow
classmate that was NOT in their group and share an
answer from both questions (an additional strategy &

To regain attention we will all put our head-up after a

additional information to their original definition on the
poster paper
Once the students are sitting back down we will have a
discussion using popsicle sticks we will choose a
student from each group to share their groups answers
from the scenario with the classroom

classrooms
