FILM TRAILER 1:

INSIDE OUT
(TRAILER #2, 2015)
BY Jake Adams

About: This is the latest film latest courtesy of Disney Pixar studios, the film is to be released in
the USA on the 19th of June 2015 and the UK on July 24th. The previous Pixar creation was Cars 2
which grossed $559.9 million in the box office.
Pixar are world renown for creating classic animated masterpieces such as Up, Wall-e, Monsters
Inc., Finding Nemo and The Toy Story Franchise with all 14 (soon to be 15) film having achieved
at least an A- from Cinema Score and being commercially and critically successful. Overall Pixar
have grossed $8.6 billion from all their films with Toy Story 3 and finding Nemo being in the top
20 highest grossing films of all time.
Furthermore Pixar have been rewarded with 15 Academy Awards, 7 Golden Globes and 11
Grammy Awards showing that these films are dearly loved by the academy, critics and
consumers worldwide.
This has built up a strong loyalty and fan-base for Pixar films which means that with the help of
the Pixar logo it is bound to be a success with no exception for Inside Out.

Picture 1: This is the second shot you see in

the trailer. It is a the infamous Pixar
animation shot whereby the lamp jumps into
take place of the I, a lot of children and
adults have grown up to this and have seen
great films courtesy of Pixar which means
that if this shot appears in a film trailer is will
excite the entice the audience due to brand
loyalty.

Picture 2: This is the first shot we get of the actual film

itself which is called the establishing shot. It is a long
shot of what is presumably their house is looks quite
dull and colourless for a Pixar film and a house which
could suggest them just moving in. This idea is backed
up by the temporary furniture and the lack of decoration
and character on the wall.
As this is the first shot we also presume that this is the
family whom our story is focused around but we know
little else about it at the moment.

Picture 3: This is the first bit of text we see and the

style of it reappears throughout the trailer implementing
it into our heads so itll be more memorable and if we
see it through another medium it will heighten our
excitement for the film.
The font style itself is plain which could be used to
reduce confusion amongst the smallest of kids so they
can read and follow the trailer as this is partially Pixar's
target audience but also it is just easy to understand for
anyone who is watching as a trailer is there is set the
scene for the film in the easiest way possible. The
variety in colour makes the text look fun and unique
which will appeal to the target market and grab the
audience attention, moreover the continual use of the
same colours will construct a memory meaning any time
they see this text they can link it straight to the film
which encourages them to watch it.

Picture 4: Although the shot after picture 3 was a

similar picture to this this is the first introduction of the
other main others; the emotions inside our heads. This
is a good angle as all the characters can be seen in a
clear way with the yellow girls or happiness in the
middle showing she will partake the most, it then
becomes clear through this shot that she is also
narrating which indicates this set of emotions will be
the most prominent in the film.
I have observed that the shot here is much brighter
and colourful than the establishing shot, that the
world in your head is so much more vivid In the
outside world, there is a stark contrast between the
outside world whereby colour isnt saturated at all as
oppose to in their heads whereby it is radiant and
rich in colour. This indicates that most of the action
will take place inside their heads and that inside is
the most stimulating of the two. This interpretation is
affiliated with the title Inside Out suggesting that
the inside world- as in, in our heads is better than
the outside

This is a poster for inside and you can see

the similarities between to the shots with
happiness in the middle of both

Picture 5: This picture is showing

happiness in front of all the girls memories,
this is the first time that memories are
brought into it and is important as it gives
away part of the story, it is also again quite
a bright colourful photo widening the gap
between the real world and this world and is
implying that this other world is brighter as I
have said before.
Picture 6: This is another of writing against a black
background, we see a return of the font style and colour
as we did before but this time it says from Disney and
Pixar which re-enforces the large company behind it
which promises it to be a successful and enjoyable film
to watch. The use of the same font as all the other
writing makes us want to read it as it could be relevant a
vital part of the story. This shot is also important as the
non-diegetic theme song changes at this point which,
along with this shot has been used to break up the two
part of the trailer showing there are two defining parts to
the story which has been emphasised by the change in
song.

Picture 7: This shot is taken shortly after

everything g goes wrong and all her memories

are lost through a series of unfortunate event
which lasted around 15 seconds of fast paced
shot which depicted the premise of the story
quickly and lead up to this shot here with the
three characters.
Firstly the shot is a long shot which outlines and emphasises
the scale of what has just happened and how much of a
impact it has had. If you look at picture 5 you see how
colourful it is but due to what has just happened it is bare
now which little colour which makes it look larger but also
shows the scale of what has just happened but we (the
audience) dont know how this has happened and therefore
will want to find out and the only way of doing this is
watching the movie. These characters have not abided by
the rule of thirds and have been placed just off the centre of
the scene which makes the shot look less planned and more
normal which gives a better feel to the film.

Picture 8: A long with the new music this is the

establishing shot of the second part to the trailer if you
will whereby two of the characters have been sucked
into another part of this girls head. Here; although it is
blurry shows the first glimpse of this new are and is
taken from an over-the-shoulder shot which makes the
audience feel apart of the action, this is a good idea to
use in a trailer as it gives the audience, especially the
younger audience to feel apart of the action despite the
fact that its only a trailer, with this they and their
imaginations and can take off which intensifies the
eagerness to see the film.
Picture 9: The next 30 seconds approximately are composed
with a montage of shots mainly switching between inside this
girls head and the real world, outside. The non-diegetic sound
playing a still pessimistic sounding and although it isnt sad its
neither happy. Here is it backing up the argument that there is
a brutal contrast between In and out with the outside world still
maintaining this bleak image whereby there is little colour and
there is continual theme with sadness and other negative
emotions as seen at the start and this shot where she is crying
In a classroom whereas inside the emotions are mainly happy
and brightly coloured.

This picture is full of mainly

stereotypically female colours i.e.
pink, purple and the text on the
screen says imagination land
which is a feminine saying which is
another stereotype however I
believe this film will still appeal to
most boys due to the big name
behind it and also the music isnt
feminine this is only of the only
shots whereby the female gender
is more prominent.

Picture 10: After the fast paced jump cut editing showing
the juxtaposing inside and outside the trailer is prominently
based on inside her head. At this point the music is reaching
a more optimistic tone and is becoming happier again. In this
shot here is which described long shot sets the scene for
another part of her head which these two characters are
exploring. The use of a long shot here is effective as it makes
the scenery look even more stunning than it I actually is, you
from this type shot you get the whole picture so feel like
youre not missing anything which allures the audience.
Picture 11: The use of a
pre-existing successful film
like Up or finding Nemo is
effective as it boosts loyalty
and confidence within the
audience that this film will
also be good because history
dictates that it will be good
so is a good method of
bringing in viewers.

Pictures 12&13: I put these two picture together as they

resembled the same thing and are used in the same way. This
is right at the end of the trailer whereby the music has climax
and is notable and also links in well with these shots emits a
feel good feeling with a variety of emotions being felt- this
however doesnt revel the whole story but gives us a snapshot
of the different emotions we are likely to feel so this and this
makes the audience excited meaning they are going for watch
it on the basis of the broad variety of emotions theyll feel
from watching. The music is also up-lifting strengthening this
feel good emotion which is reason to watch this film.

Picture 14: This is the final view of the emotions in this

trailer and it tells us who theyre voiced by, this is main in
the interest of adults as if they see a person they like then
they are more likely to take their kids or themselves to
see it in the interest of seeing someone they liked, this
has worked in the past of non-Pixar films like the Shrek
franchise which became highest grossing animated
franchise of all time grossing over $3.5 billion dollars
worldwide.
