tobedoneonboardships,thereafewoneswhichmarineengineersmustknowwithoutfail.

1.BunkerCalculation:
Bunkertermstofueloilinmaritimeindustry.Bunker
quantitycalculationisthemostimportantcalculationwhich
everymarineengineershouldbefamiliarwiththroughout
hiscareer.Bunkerfuel,beingahighvaluedproduct,has
tobeverycarefullyandaccuratelycalculatedfor
determiningthequantity.
Thevolumeofdefinitequantityofbunkerincreaseswith
increaseintemperaturewhereasitsweightremainsthe
same.Forthisreason,bunkerisalwaysorderedand
measuredinweightandnotbyvolume.
Alsoalltheenergyandefficiencycalculationsoffuelon

boardshipsarecalculatedintermsofmassofthefuelratherthanitsvolume.(Calculationofbunkerf
quantityinweightinvolvesmanyfactorstobeconsideredmakingitmorecomplex.)

Mostly,thefourthengineerwillbethedeputyoftheChiefengineerforreceivingbunker&measuring
bunkerquantityformaintainingrecords.
Mentionedbelowistheprocedureformeasuringandcalculatingthebunkerquantity:

shouldbewellnotedwhiletakingthesoundingofbunkertanks.
>Everyshipisprovidedwithatankcapacitytableinwhicheachtankcapacityinvolumeismarked
againstthesuccessivelevelsofsounding/ullagewithcorrectionfactorsundervarioustrimandheel

conditionsoftheship.Thevolumeoffueloilattanktemperatureforthecorrespondingtanksounding
thusmeasuredusingtankcapacitytable,whichgivestheactualsoundedvolume.

>Thedensityoffueloil(inkg/m3)atstandardreferencetemperatureof15Cisalwaysprovidedbyt

supplierinBunkerDeliveryNote.Withthisthedensityoffueloilattanktemperaturecanbedetermine
usingASTMtableorusingsoftwaremostcommonlyinstalledonallshipscomputer.
TheformulausedtocalculatetheTemperatureCorrectedDensityis:
=(DensityofFuelOil@15C)x[1{(T15)x0.00064}]
Where:
T=temperatureofoilinbunkertanksindegreecelcius,
0.00064=Correctionfactor

Sincethebunkeroilisnormallysuppliedtothevesselattemperaturehigherthen15C,theformulau
forcalculatingthebunkerquantityinweightwillbe
MetricTonnes=(ActualSounderVolume)X(TemperatureCorrectedDensity)

>Thecorrespondingvaluesofeachtankaretabulatedforeasyreadingandthetotalweightofbunk
quantityiscalculated.

2.SpecificFuelOilConsumption(SFOC):

SpecificfueloilconsumptionisthemeasureofmassoffuelconsumedperunittimetoproduceperK
ThemarineengineefficiencyisusuallydeterminedusingtheSFOC.
Inordertoachieveaccuracy,thefuelconsumptionandpowerdevelopedisalwaysmeasuredovera
suitabletimeperiodonagoodweather.TheformulausedforcalculatingSFOCis:
SFOC(g/kwh)=Massoffuelconsumedperhour/PowerdevelopedinKW
>Thereadingsofflowmetertomainengineshouldbenotedoverthespecifiedtimeintervalsay1

hour.Withthedifferenceinreadingsthevolumeoffuelconsumedisobtained.Itcanalsobemeasure
bynotingdowntheHFOservicetankreadingprovidedtheoilisbeingsuppliedonlytomainengine.
>Themassofobservedvolumeoffuelconsumedcanbedeterminedbyfollowingtheabovesaid
bunkercalculationprocedure.

>Thehorsepowercanbemeasuredusingdynamometeriffittedontheshaftoftheenginewhichwi

indicatetheBHPindigitalindicator.Ifnot,thehorsepowercanalsobecalculatedusingenginerpma
averagepumpfuelindexwiththeaidofenginecharacteristiccurveofvariousseatrialswhichis
suppliedbythemanufacturer.Howeverthecalorificvalueofthefuelusedforseatrialmaydifferand
hencecompensationfactorhastobedeterminedtoobtaintheaccuracyincalculation.

3.PercentageofSlip:

referenceisthespecificfuelconsumptionontestbedatthemanufacturer.Herethefuel
consumptionaswellastheengineperformancedataaremeasured,andconvertedtotheISO
condition.Itisimportantfortheactualsituationalsotorecordtheengineperformancedataand
toconvertthemtoISO,otherwiseyoucompareappleswithpears.Therearenotmanytools
availableforthismanouver.Youcandoitallmanually,butitwillconsumealotoftime.Atour
websiteyoucanseeouttool,whereyougettheisocorrectionandcomparisoninstantlywhen
enteringtheperformancedata.
