Umoja Tanzania Inc. Annual Report 2013

Message from the Co-Founder & Director

This year Umoja has seen continued success with the programme in
terms of the outcomes for our beneficiaries, Umoja's students. Notably
one young woman received life changing neurosurgery outside of
Tanzania, which was otherwise impossible without Umoja's support. She
has progressed from being partially paralyzed and unable to walk, to
being able to walk unaided. She plans to return to education in early
2014. This was a great achievement by Umoja and our donors, as we
raised over $14,000 USD for her medical treatment.
We strive to support all our young people through their education and
into fulfilling careers. In 2013, further graduates have moved from the
Outplacement Scheme and into full time employment, including four
Caroline Goody in Nairobi with Umoja student, just
prior to neurosurgery.
Umoja graduates who are now working in hospitality at a hotel /
restaurant in Arusha and another at a lodge in Zanzibar. Two Umoja youth, Gladness and Denis have graduated from
higher education. Gladness graduated from teachers college and Denis is now a qualified accountant and has joined the
Umoja Board of Directors.
As previous years, our successes are measured by the progress and welfare improvements of our students and the
challenges are focused around attracting sufficient funding to support these successes. Umoja Tanzania continues to rely
on community fundraising, individual donations and our student sponsorship programme and no major funding. As a
result funding is unreliable and potentially unsustainable. Umoja is constantly looking at ways to improve this critical
situation.
We have recently partnered with Australian Volunteers International (AVI)
and the first long-term placement position has been filled for the role of
Grants Manager, who will work with Umoja for a period of two years. We
hope that this position will offer some financial stability for the Umoja
programme. We have also initiated several new programmes to increase
local revenue, including afternoon classes for paying students and a craft
industry.
Umoja is looking forward to welcoming a new group of students in January
2014 and forming new partnerships to improve our programme. I would
like to thank all our donors, supporters, staff and volunteers for assisting
with our success in 2013. If you would like to know more about Umoja,
please see our website: www.umoja.com.au.
Best wishes for the year ahead,

Umoja Graduate, Isaya Denis

The Programme:
The Umoja Centre is an educational institution located in the city of
Arusha, Northern Tanzania. We administer a free educational and
support programme specifically designed for disadvantaged
young adults who have fallen out of the formal education
system.
The programme consists of a Foundation Year during which
students are instructed in English, IT and Life Skills. They are also
given access to information and resources which help them to
care for their physical and emotional well being.
Once they have successfully completed the Foundation Year,
students become part of the Outplacement Scheme whereby
they are placed into the mainstream education system,
vocational training, or into new careers, which allow them to
provide effectively for themselves and their families. Umoja supports
our students, in terms of mentorship, social and medical welfare and
financially, from when they are selected to join the programme until they have found employment. Umoja's graduates
are working in various sectors and professions from teachers to tour guides, IT consultants, chefs, hair dressers and
small business owners.

Umoja Staff & Capacity Building:

Umoja is proud to employ 9 full time Tanzanian staff in a range of positions from teaching staff, administration, domestic
and security. Three of our skilled staff are graduates from the Umoja programme. In addition to the full time staff Umoja
also welcomes international volunteers who support our work. This year we have formed a new partnership with
Australian Volunteers International (AVI) and continued to have the support of Youth Challenge International volunteers
from Canada.
Two of our key staff are supported by Umoja (and our sponsors) to continue professional training part time while
working at Umoja. Pascalina Mmari (Office Manager) is studying for a certificate in Office Management and will
complete her training in June 2014. Michael Gombe (Outplacement Officer) is studying Community Development and
will also complete his training in June 2014.
Michael Gombe also attended a one day workshop on basic counseling skills for vulnerable youth. In 2014 we have plans
to increase the qualifications of our two teachers for IT and English.

Umoja Tanzania Inc. Annual Report 2013

Activities:
In 2013, 41 students completed the Foundation Year, gaining basic
education and an increase in knowledge about their health, rights,
life skills and the world around them. 85% of these students passed
the Foundation Year and 49% of these have joined the
Outplacement Scheme. The additional students are waiting for
educational programmes which will start in 2014. This year we had
4 students who did not attain the grades required to move into the
Outplacement Scheme and will repeat their Foundation Year in
2014, enabling them to achieve more overall in their education.
These are in fact our youngest students, who lack basic education
and have struggled with personal problems throughout the year.
With further social welfare support and further classes to increase
their academic performance, we are sure that these students will
succeed.
Umoja continues to work with youth in our Outplacement Scheme,
with 114 in ongoing education, including 40 currently at Secondary
School and many others in vocational training. Since 2009, Umoja
has assisted over 200 young people, with 62 currently employed
and 114 working towards their goals in the Outplacement Scheme.

at a busy town cafe.

In an effort to increase our local revenue and increase sustainability, we have introduced afternoon classes open to the
general public in Arusha. These outside students pay a small fee to attend either (or both) English Language and I.T.
training. Although currently small, we hope to increase the numbers of paying students in the afternoons, to assist with
the youth programme offered at Umoja. We are striving to increase our local income generation to assist with project
sustainability.

" Thanks Umoja - Its very important to

me because it has high positive attitude
and to make me to reach my goal in
future generation and to be in high level
of standard of living. I love Umoja Centre
forever in my life." (2013 Umoja Student)

Impact:

they are able to find meaningful employment. By the end of 2013, Umoja has seen 198 students enrolled in the
Foundation Year; 182 students successfully completed with only 16 failing to complete over the 5 years.

Of the 182 students who have completed the Umoja Foundation Year 85% of these go onto various higher education
institutes. The remaining 15% who do not continue with furthers study either enter directly into the work force or leave
the programme entirely. Those who leave the programme continue to struggle to find ongoing long term employment
due to their low education levels, and often return to Umoja for support.

Umoja Tanzania Inc. Annual Report 2013

Status of Funds:
2013 saw an increase in project funding from Australia through our partners, Global Development Group (GDG), this is a
combination of student sponsorships, individual donations and fundraising activities. There is a discrepancy between the
2013 revenue and 2013 expenditure due to a number of depreciation (non-cash) items.
Programme Management includes our salaries (teachers, domestic, security etc), building costs (primarily rent and
maintenance), utilities, transportation,
stationery and office requirements.
Income is all funded by individual donors so it
is difficult to maintain and increase donor
amounts. Income increased by 26% from last
year. However, we fundraised 20,000,000 TZS
to support a student with medical needs. In
2014, we will begin applying for grants to
help maintain a level income to cover our
expenses.
Expenses have increased 20%. A large part of
this increase is due to the medical expenses
for one student. All other expenses increased
as a result of inflated prices. School fees have
increased as an additional 40 students have
graduated from the foundation year and are
now attending further education.

How to Support Us:

There are a number of ways to support Umoja with our youth
development and educational programmes:
Donations
Financial donations are a fundamental part of what keeps Umoja running
on a daily basis. These donations are used for a range of needs such as
salaries, building maintenance, books, teaching resources, and routine
medical checkups for students. No matter the size, each donation is fully
appreciated and put to good use to help us educate and provide for our
students.
Student Sponsorship
In order to provide students with a free education, Umoja aims to match
each of our students with a sponsor whose contribution provides the
necessary financial support for the students tuition. Student sponsorships
contributes to the direct and indirect cost of a students education,
including school fees, uniforms, books, stationery and health care.
Sponsoring a student costs 25 or $40 AUD/USD per month.
On-Site Volunteering

Umoja Foundation Year student, with his

graduation certificate, now sponsored to start
vocational training in 2014

Umoja is always on the lookout for skilled, motivated volunteers to help us fulfill our mission. We have need for
expertise in various areas such as teaching, marketing, grant writing and fundraising, medicine / nursing, and more.
Fundraising
Community fundraising efforts are of vital importance, as
student sponsorships and donations alone do not cover
the costs of operating and maintaining The Umoja
Centre. Money raised is specifically used to cover such
costs as rent, utilities and other capital expenditures like
furniture, computers. Fundraising is also essential to
support students in Outplacement who do not have
sponsors.

Looking Forward:
One of our highest priorities is to improve our organizational development and planning. This includes reviewed
budget, monitoring and evaluation and improved financial stability. Umoja is currently seeking funding to hire a
consultant to assist in these areas.
Finance: We expect to increase funding through student sponsorships, larger networks and securing of larger
funding. Umoja shall continue to develop sustainable business activities to increase local revenue.
Programme: Umoja will be welcoming 40 new young people in January 2014, after a careful selection process
based on motivation, need and age. We aim to improve and develop our Foundation Year curriculum and
improve our social welfare capacity by recruiting a Social Worker in 2014.
Notable Upcoming Events: In April and May 2014, Umoja's Director, Caroline Goody will be in Australia and the
UK to raise the profile of Umoja. If you are able to host an event or are a member of a club/society (such as
Rotary) and would like Caroline to attend, please contact: info@umoja.com.au.

Umoja Tanzania Inc. is a registered NGO in Tanzania (00003335). In the
