For125yearsthecompanyhasdealtwithtonsupontonsofoutagesandseverelossestoits
systemsduetoOregonsbipolarweatherconditions.Eachtimeastormoutageoccurs,PGEstaff
stepuptothefrontlinesandbattlethroughtheworstofnaturaldisasterstomakerepairsand
returnpowertocustomers.Checkoutsomehighlightsbelowthatreflectthebravery,dedication
andhardworkofouremployeesfromsomemajorstormoutagesinPGEhistory.

TheSilverThawhitOregonhard,freezingeverythinginitspaththefirstweekof
February1916.Theiceclungtoelectricalpolesandprostratedwiresformilesand
miles,intoalmostinextricabletangles,costingthecompany$140,000indamages.

DestroyingtheWWIIVanportHousingareaonMay30,1948,theVanportFloodwas
knownasthegreatestsingledisasterinthehistoryoftheColumbiaRiverBasin.Much
losswassuffered,includingadrowningofaPGEemployee.Regardlessofthe
unfortunatecircumstances,ourstaffperseveredthroughthehighwaterstorestorepower.

TheinfamousColumbusDayStorm,akaFrieda,violentlysweptthroughOregonwith
windsupto145mphonOct.14,1962.Thetyphooncreated$4millionindamagesand
98percentofcustomerslostpower.Employeesworkedlongdaysfortwoweeksto
restorelosses.Oncethewindsdieddowneveryonetookasighofrelief,butmanymore
blusterywindsblewOregonswaythroughoutthe60s.

Floodsoccurredrightinthemiddleofthe60swindstormdecade.Heavydownpours
floodedthePacificNorthwest,northernCaliforniaandpartsofwesternNevadaonDec.
21and22in1964.Amonthlater,asecondfloodknockedouttheCazaderoDamonJan.
29,1965.Ourlinecrewsandstaffseffortswereapplaudedbycustomerswhowroteto
PGEtothankouremployeesforamiraculousjobinrestoringservicesorapidlyunder
themostadverseconditions.

TwomajoricestormshitOregonalmostexactlyayearapartfromoneanotheronJan.9,
1979andJan.8,1980.The79icestormhademployeesworking24hourdays,sothe
companycalledforassistancefromsurroundingutilitycompaniesinOregonand
Washington.Luckily,PGEwasmorethanpreparedthesecondtimearoundtobattlethe
ice,coldandrainduringthe1980storm,whichwasnearly50percentworsethatthe79
stormincost,lossesandrestorationtime.

Inthewinterof95and96theweatherdecidedtoshowoffitsmanytalentsaround
Oregon,causingicestorms,heavywinds,mudslidesandfloods.Theparadeofstorms
keptupforeightweeksstraight,testingtheenduranceofPGEemployees.Takingon

eachstormasitrolledin,PGEstaffworkedcautiouslyandhastilytorepairdamagesand
returnelectricitytothepublic.

Manyemployeesrecollectthehardworkanddedicationittookduringsomeofourmajor
21stcenturystorms.Forinstance,theJanuary2008ArticBlastthatconsistedofbelow
freezingtemperaturesfordaysonendandaseriesofsnowstorms,whichleftPortland19
inchesdeepinsnow.Orletsreminisceontherecent2014VeteransDaystormthat
broughtheavy,briskwindsandfreezingtemperatures.Regardlessoftheextremitiesof
anystorm,ourstaffhasproventimeandtimeagainthatourcustomerscanrelyonour
employeestosafelyandquicklyturnthepowerbackon.
