Throughout this course I have been working on what I can do as a teacher and the behavioral

issues that are ongoing in my district. This course allowed me to create and come up with goals
that should help the behavioral issues for my upcoming teaching years. Since the first day of
school I have been going over rules and what is good and bad in school for my students. From
classroom rules to following directions when we have gym, I have gone over the same thing over
and over again. I tell my students all the time that you should be able to do this without even
thinking about it. You should know how to act when you come into the gym or when we are
preparing to go outside. They should know to be as quiet as they are throughout the rest of the
day and not run in the hallways. Most importantly, they should know when the teacher is giving
directions they should pay attention and follow the instructions being addressed.
Our behavior and our attitudes are shaped by our mental modes: the images, assumptions, and
stories that we carry in our minds of ourselves, other people, institutions, and every aspect of the
world (Senge, 2012). It seems that only a handful of students understand this because the
reaction I get from compared to other students. Without a doubt it is the same few students who
react perfectly and on time, while the rest waste time. This goes for the same with my 5th
graders, but they know their directions, yet they dont have self-control. This should be done
unconsciously, yet they never do it. These little things build them up for the more pressing things
they will be up against in life, and hopefully one day they realize that without their educators,
they would have been lost.
Using three out of the five disciplines to help resolve these problems I have in my classroom I
would first use personal mastery as one component. The epitome of personal mastery in the
classroom is helping children to decipher their passions, to explore whether they believe these
are possible, and the nurture their courage to delve into it, without judging them right or wrong
(Senge, 2012). Using a strategy like this will allow me to challenge my students to use their
minds and become dependent on their own decisions. Using personal mastery will allow me to
lecture my students more about decision making and what consequences could happen if the
wrong decision is made.
The next component I would incorporate in my lessons helping me become a better teacher when
dealing with behavior and self-control would be working with mental modes. Full engagement
can be very exhausting sin some ways, but it is also more joyful and inspiring in the long run,
because you are never stuck sitting at your desk in front of the classroom. (Senge, 2012). When
trying to control them as they continue to talk after every question I ask, I point out to them that I
am always on the move meaning they must pay attention because my lesson is forty minutes
long. They think that because I made a point or we laughed as a whole they are allowed to talk.
It is amazing that no matter how many times I ask politely or with aggression tell them not to
talk they eventually talk again. This is a problem I must improve on and mental modes are a key
component.

The final discipline I feel is important is team learning. If there is one thing that I do this is a
component I use the most with my students. I not only allow them to work independently but I
also with one another. I put students in different groups as often as possible so they know
everyone in their class and become familiar with each students pros and cons. Reason for
teachers to be involved in dialogue as well, not only with the children, but with on another, as
one of the most powerful ways to teach children (Senge, 2012). I know that if I involve what
they are learning in their classroom that will not only help the teacher but more importantly the
students. I have cross-curricular lessons but I know I need more in my units. By talking with the
teachers and becoming a team by communicating with each other this could solve the behavioral
issue I am having with my students.
The SWOT assignment truly helped me understand where my district and I stand in education.
SWOT means: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. By breaking down the district
into these four components they became a stepping stone for me to see what needs to be changed
and or added to the schools curriculum.
Strengths
After careful thought I came up with a lot more strengths that I thought I would considering how
my district is in serious negative circumstances. First and foremost the students are learning
what they should. This means, me as a teacher, I have reached my annual goals. As a P.E.
teacher my Student Growth Objective (SGO) was meant. I was supposed to reach a 75% increase
with performing a push-up but mine was a 94% increase instead. I involved cross-curricular
lessons throughout the year. One of my favorite lessons is the muscle puzzle. That lesson goes
as follows:
Lesson Description: Start off by explaining to the students that they are doctors and they will
be putting together the human body of muscles puzzle. Both teams will be set up as they do
for sideline basketball, which is standing in a single file line on each side of the basketball
court. When the teacher says go the first person in line will run to the center of the court to
retrieve their teams basketball and begin dribbling to their hoop. They have 3 shots to get
one basket in. If they make it in on the first shot it is 3 points, 2nd shot 2 points, 3rd shot 1
point, and if they do not make it in after 3 shots they will get a of a point. The teams will
have two players keeping score throughout the whole game. After they shoot they will put
the basketball back in the center of the gym, go to the muscle box, grab one muscle in the
box. Then they will go to the callisthenic box and grab one exercise out of that box. After that
they will go to the teams area where they will be putting together the muscle body puzzle,
place the muscle in that area, and then will tell their teammates what exercise they all will be
doing. That team must do 10 repetitions for that callisthenic. When they are done the next
person will repeat the same steps. When the muscles are all out of the box they will work as
a team to put together the human muscle puzzle. The first team to put together to muscle
body wins that part of the game. Finally I will join both teams and we will add up how many

points they equated during the shooting part of the game. The team with the most points will
win that part of the game. When finished switch the scorekeepers and begin the game again.

Other proud strengths that I have noticed I accomplished thus far is that students are learning the
fundamentals of each sport I teach. Todays kids are not as athletic and although they do not
understand the actual rules of some games they are learning the fundamentals of each sport. My
students K-5 are continuing to learn the muscles of the human body. Some of the strengths the
district has is we have a great Special Education Program. Almost every school has 2-3 Special
Needs classrooms and it is increasing every year. We also use PowerSchool throughout the
district. Although it is about 2 years into use in our district we all are becoming more acquainted
with it each year. It is great to keep connection with parents which is a huge issue we are going
through in our district. Another great feature the district added was Smartboards. This up dated
technology is an absolute phenomenal way to teach our students and is great for the district and
our education. The students seem to really enjoy the Smartboards and it is a step up with todays
technology.
Weakness
Unfortunately my district is going through a lot more weaknesses than strengths. Starting with
me, I feel that I need be gain more patience with my students when it comes to their behavioral
issues. My first year I had a lot of patience because I may have been strict but I did not feel
much aggression towards my students as I do now. It is just the lack of respect they have that
drives me crazy. I am no babysitter and that is what teaching feels like and what it has become
especially in my district. To get back on track I need to concentrate on other ways to control
their behavioral issues and show them in a more positive way what respect is and the importance
of good behavior. I need to go to more workshops throughout the school that helps my subject
area. The town has teachers in the building teach the workshops and its about math or language
arts. These areas really do not have anything to do with me as a P.E. teacher. Yes, I can use them
for cross-curricular but as a P.E. teacher we need more workshops for our department. For the
district our computer system is outdated. We have Smartboards but the computers are outdated
and prolong the system from working to its true value. Another issue is our parents are not
involved as much as they should be because of things like a language barrier. They cannot help
their children with the homework because they cannot read English. That to me is a problem for
our district. They need to be more direct and help us as teachers with their children. Not just
say, Here you go, have fun babysitting my children for the day. One last problem which is
probably is huge ordeal is the constant battle we have against the Board of Education versus the
Belleville Education Association. It is an ongoing battle that must come to an in order to save or
district and strengthen our education for these children.
Opportunities

The best part about life and change is not matter what door closes another one opens. There is so
much opportunity this district and I can do to better our educational program and the behavioral
issues. I should do things like compliment the behavioral students more than they need to so
they feel that extra gratification. Instead of sitting students during lunch because of bad behavior
I can have them help me during lunch. They can become my lunch helpers. Also they can run
my classes with me by doing the attendance or running the warm-up exercises. I need to have
the parents involved more. I will send home a work-out assignment and the parents need to
watch and write down their production or repetitions. Maybe have the parents come in without
their child knowing so they can see how misbehaved they really are. I have to come up with a
more constant movement in the lessons so the behavioral have not time to act out. The district
needs to have more Behavioral needed classrooms so they do not distract students who want to
learn. Opportunity is always knocking at that next door, I just have to open it.
Threats
Some common threats that are occurring in our town may only go for the worse meaning nothing
will change and it will become an extremely high urbanized district. Parents will not want to
help their children with education and will only think of school as a babysitters club. The BOE
will continue to fight against the BEA. The state will come in because we cannot pass our
annual state tests. Technology will not be updated due to possible bankruptcy in the town. I may
be transferred unwillingly and everything I put into this school will be washed away and have to
start over in another one. Fast growing of technology like video games are not doing what they
should for children meaning they do not want to go outside and play.

Smart Goals
I feel that for next year I have came up with some goals to strengthen the behavioral problem in
my classroom.
Goal one is a great goal because it is a goal the student to accomplish. What I want to do is form
some sort of contract with the students. I will send home a contract to students who have given
me a behavioral issue. The contract will say that every time their child achieves my goal in that
daily lesson they will earn points. The points will turn into fake money. Each time they perform
positively they earn more points. The more points they earn the more money they receive. At the
end of the month or week they add up their money and they get to buy a toy from the toy chest. I
feel this may allow the students to want to earn their points to get their toy they been wanting to
buy. The toy chest will have things like: Small toys: cars, cards, balloons, trading cards, gift
certificates, healthy food choices, healthy current books, books, pencils, erasers, tennis balls,
basketballs, baseballs, voit balls, etc. This should be achieved and started from monthly
department meetings and notify the BOE for approval. When my supervisor says its approved
then it should be carried out immediately.
Goal two is concentrating on both the teacher and the student with behavioral problems in the
classroom. This goal will again allow the teacher to let the behavioral student run the class if
they are misbehaving. Small assignment like taking attendance or running the warm-up
exercises is a key factor to beginning the class. Giving them that responsibility will maybe allow
them to see how it is to be in the front of the gym watching everyone like the teacher does. The
teacher will also have them help set up or clean up after or before each class. Again keeping
them pre-occupied will allow the student to focus on the job rather than distracting themselves
and disrupting the class. This could be assessed by monthly evaluations by me keeping a log for
the student and for my annual evaluations from my supervisor for me.
Goal three is simply to go to more Professional Workshops relating to my department. The
department should have monthly meetings and set a standard workshop goal with about five
workshops per year. These workshops should include ways to improve behavioral issues in a
P.E. classroom. These workshops should help teachers react to students with behavioral issues
and how to address the situation in a positive reaction. The workshops should also be P.E.
related unlike what we are going through now which are not related to our curriculum at all. I
feel this is a strong goal that our department and district must accomplish in the upcoming year.
