A Salt Square in Sutorine during the King Tvrtko I
Summary
In the middle ages salt trade was very profitable, thus its sale was regulated
by different agreements between Dubrovnik on one side and Serbia and Bosnia on
the other side. Among four squares where salt trade was allowed during the time of
the King Tvrtko I, none was within former state boundaries of Bosnia. Besides that, a
major part of countrys export and import businesses was run through Dubrovnik,
whose merchants kept for them larger part of profit. Tvrtko carried out series of
measures which would make Bosnia partially economically independent from
Dubrovnik. The most important one was related to opening a new square for salt
trade, what was contrary to the old agreements. The new square was established in
1382 in the field of Sutorine and town of Saint Stephan (todays Herceg-Novi) was

built with the intention to become a main port of medieval Bosnian state. This
measure resulted in severe protests of Dubrovnik people, with the aim to forbid salt
trade on the newly established square. Their protests temporarily gave results,
however, salt was still traded in the new square from time to time.
