Date: 6/16/2015

Teacher: Ms. Emily

School: MSU Elementary

Class: KIN 355 Grade 5-8

Equipment: Open space.
Time: 8:30
Term: Summer
Targeted NASPE Standard(s): NASPE Standards 1, 2, 4, 5
Specific Objective: By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to name and
demonstrate four different types of body movements. Students will be assessed
through observation throughout the lesson and at the end when they are asked to
show the different movements.
Concomitant Objective: The students will be moving their bodies throughout the
lesson.

Procedures Followed
Warm Up: NONE NEEDED

Transition:
- When I say go, students spread out on this half of
the gym. Make sure you wont hit anyone.
- Set induction given there.
Set Induction:
30
- Can everyone shake out their bodies like this.
Seconds
- Shake body out
- There are a lot of body movements and muscles
working that go into moving like that. Does anyone
know of any body movements or the muscles that
they are moving?
- Today we are going to learn about body
movement and some of the different muscles that
are working
- Explain Learnable Piece
30
Learnable Piece:
Seconds
- Students will go through a bunch of movements to
warm their bodies up and get them loose. Students
will learn that this is important to do before
exercising. Students will learn that these muscles
that we think about moving are called skeletal
muscle. Students will be able to pair a muscle with
a type of movement at the end of the lesson. They
will know there are over 15 types of movements
that the body can do.
30
Transition:
Seconds
- We are now going to learn about a few different
muscle movements and the associated muscles
that we are moving.

Presentation of New Material/Directions:

- SAFETY:
o Watch out for your neighbors!
- Checking for Understanding: can anyone tell me
what the type of muscles that we will be moving
are called?
- Answer: skeletal muscle
-

The first movement we will be doing is called

flexion. Put your arms out and bring your forearm
closer to your upper arm. The muscle here is the
biceps brachii, commonly known as the biceps.
Flexion is bringing the forearm back down. It is the
opposite movement from extension. Repeat these
movements.
These are movements you use when you shoot a
basketball. Pretend to throw one.
The next movement is abduction of the arm. This is
when the arm is at your side and you bring it away
from your body.
Adduction is the opposite. It is when you bring the
arm back to your body. Think of it like adding
mass to your body. The muscles in your back are
allowing you to make these movements. The
deltoids, trapezius, the pectoralis major along with
others.
These movements are needed in order to swim.
Pretend to swim.
Depression is when you bring your head towards
your body like a turtle. Muscles are: Trapezius and
pectoralis minor.
Elevation is the opposite. Its when you lift your
head up off your body like you are looking for a
friend you lost. Muscles are: trapezius and levator
scapula muscles.
This movement can be used when looking for a
pop fly and then ducking when you realize its
going to hit you.
The last couple movements we will learn are in the
feet. Dorsiflexion is when you stand on your heel.
Muscles: tibialis anterior and the extensor
muscles.
Plantaflexion is when you point your toes. Dancers
use this movement a lot. Muscles: gastrocnemius
(calf) and flexor muscles.

Guided Activity Time with Corrective Feedback:

Now Id like you guys to do pair up with the person next
to you. Id like you to practice these movements by
making a 4 part routine using 4 different actions that we
learned. Try to name the action and the muscle that you
are using. I will come around to see your progress.
Transition:
- Everyone come circle around the white circle

Possible Modifications:
- Could add more of the body movements.
- Could show all the parts of the body that do
extension rather than just the arm.
- Could have them do a written assessment at the
end
- Could have them actually do that activities
associated with the movements.

Lesson Review/Checking for Understanding:

- Questions:
o Can anyone demonstrate their routine and
name the different movements for me?
o Can anyone name the muscles as well.
o Can someone show me what extension is?
What muscle is being used?
o What about flexion? Muscle?
o When would you use flexion and extension?
o What about plantarflexion? Muscles?
o Dorsiflexion? Muscles?
o When would you see these actions?
Notes: This lesson is for older students who want to learn more about the
human body and how it works.
