MCHE 421 Heat Transfer
Fall semester 2013-2014

Report #1
Report on Thermal Insulation
The following topics should be included in the report with the aid of photos,
sketches and tables and the report should be written using MS word with the cover
page sent previously.
The report should be ended by list of references used in getting the information
about thermal insulation and R-value. Textbooks, reports, websites are examples
of those references.
The report should be delivered personally by Friday Dec. 15th. Mid night
electronically using I-Connect. You will see a folder call Report3, upload the file
using the following format:
"201100333 Yourname Report3 Dec15.doc" Any other filenames will NOT
considered.
To those who cannot upload the file, can submit it printed on Friday 15th before
4:00 pm at the office including the cover page with any plastic folders.

Objectives for using the insulations

Classifications of thermal insulation and selecting the proper Insulation
What is meant by super-insulators
What is the R-value of a wall? How does it differ from the unit thermal
resistance of the wall? How is it related to the U-factor? and what is the
practical value of R-values in building?
5. The unit thermal resistances (R-values) of both 40-mm and 90-mm
vertical air spaces are given in Table 10 in the appendices to be 0.22 m2C/W,
which implies that more than doubling the thickness of air space in a wall
has no effect on heat transfer through the wall. Do you think this is a typing
error? Explain.
