NO SCHOOL

We remind families that students are expected to be

in school every day, in their full TYWLS uniform. In the
event that your child does not attend a trip, they are required
to attend school. Work will be provided to them, including
the material students are learning on the trip. We want to
make sure that they are not missing out on the knowledge
the others are learning.

Its starting to feel like spring! We finished our state

tests, the weather is starting to warm up and our girls have
tons of energy. These are the wonderful signs of spring and
an indicator that the end of the school year is upon us.

Everyday, Tele comes to class

with a positive attitude. She works
hard, stays focused and helps others when she can. Tele has integrity and does not allow others to
sway her. You make your teachers
proud!

A Message the From Co-Directors

We have so many special events and trips these

next two months. Not wanting them to interfere with our instruction prior to the state assessments, we postponed several outdoor learning experiences. We encourage parents
to keep our girls focused on their academic work as we enjoy time learning outside the classroom. We dont want our
girls to feel that they can take it easy at this point; its a critical time. Finals are less than 7 weeks away. Between now
and the end of the year, there will be several assessments
and projects; great opportunities to improve their
grades. We want all our girls to be meet the promotional
criteria and move to the next grade in good standing.

We, Seventh Grade Teachers, are
so proud to announce Avery Ransom as student of the month. She
exhibits all the qualities of leadership
that a TYWLS student should possess, both inside and outside of the

The Leopard Times

6th Grade: Michelle Barroso

Michelle is the 6th grade choice
this month! Michelle always goes
above and beyond in all of her assignments. In each class, she can
be seen on-task and diligently
completing her work. She embodies the Leopard Values!

6 Trip: Seeds to Trees (NYU; CU)

During this month, we look forward to your joining us

on one of the several events we are having. On Tuesday,
the 5th of May, we have our final Parent-Teacher Conferences from 4:30-7:30 pm. This is a great time to discuss
any last minute concerns regarding your childs progress. Its a good time to simply check-in with those one or
two teachers whose classes your daughter is struggling
in. Since its Teacher Appreciation Week, feel free to visit
those one or two special teachers that have positively impacted your daughter. Additionally, there are other family
events such as the Family Trip to the Aquarium or the Hall of
Science. Our Parents Association is sponsoring a cute
Mother-Daughter event and a Teacher Vs. Students basketball game. There is even a Health Fair for a short family
outing. Lots going on!
The end of the school year may be coming soon, but
May will be quite a busy month. We appreciate you helping
keep the girls focused and look forward to seeing you at one
of our many family events.
Sincerely
Ms. Eisenberg and Ms. Laureano

The PA Does It Again!

By: Kateleen Lopez (Fordham)
The Parent Association has been such a
driving force behind raising money for the 8th
graders! They held another
breakfast bar in which they
sold: croissants, waffles, donuts, sausages, cereal and so
much more!
The breakfast bar was
held in the school auditorium
and the funds will be going towards the 8th grade
yearbooks! Thank you PA for being so supportive
and all that you do! Thank you Ms. Pena (Title 1
of the PA) for providing us with the information!

Eat an Apple a Day!

Contributed by: Food for Thought
Food For Thought recently watched a movie called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. In the movie, a man named Joe Cross was overweight and
as a result, he developed a skin disease. To help
him get better he took around 5 pills a day! This
was a smack in the face for him and this made
him go on a diet. In this diet he was only allowed
to drink a smoothie of vegetables and fruits for 60
days. This movie showed us that eating right is a
big part of staying healthy. Good tip: even an apple a day is beneficial for your overall health.
Did You Know?
Apples are so important for our bodies. Did
you know that eating apples can help prevent lung
cancer and clean out your organs? I guess its
true, an apple a day may really keep the doctor
away!

Mystery Powders, Different Liquids

Classroom Spotlight: 6th Grade Science
By: Jasmine Archibald (Columbia)
In science class this week, students
were able to conduct very interesting experiments! Through these experiments, students
tried to figure out how different mystery powders would react with various types of liquids.
Ms. Nelson put together a process where each
table received baking soda, plaster, salt, sugar
and starch. Tables were then advised to mix
powders and liquids together and observe the
reactions. Who knew that plaster plus vinegar
equals fizz?
Its safe to say, well all be really careful when
mixing things in the kitchen!

Why Are We the Lady Leopards?

By: Jenayah Shearn (NYU)
The leopard is such a fascinating animal, its no wonder why the leopard is our mascot. We asked Ms. Laureano how we came to be the Lady Leopards, and she
shared a silly story:
About a year before opening the school, we gathered with a group of teachers to create our "ideal"
school. We worked for hours thinking about the
best way to help our girls succeed. We wanted it
to be a "feel good" place where motivated young
girls would work along side others with the same
attitude. We worked for several hours into the late
evening. The more tired we were, the sillier we became. For some reason, we thought a Leopard was
a good animal. We all began roaring like leopards. As we pretended to be our future students,
we raised our hands like a Leopard
might and found it hysterical, and
so we became the Lady Leopards.
Lucky for us, leopard print is so beautiful and its easy to find cute leopard
accessories! Good choice!

Numbers on a Paper
By: Stephannie Perez
Thank you to the Student Council and teachers
who went out of their way to buy and distribute pretest goodies! The yummy snacks and motivational
quotes helped us a great deal!
-TYWLS Students

Grades are what?

Nothing but numbers.
There are bigger things to worry about!
For example, whether or not someone could come up
and grab you!
But that's also something you shouldn't HAVE to worry
about!
Children go home,
afraid to show their grades,
afraid to get yelled at!

A special thank you to Ms. DiLone, Ms. Fermin, Ms. Laureano, Ms. Mora , Anyara Martinez, Ashley Peralta, Sherley
Ortiz and Sabrina Lugo for translating articles for us!

Afraid to be beaten,
all for the fact that there's a 40, 50, 60...
Reprimanded for numbers on a paper,
graded and tested on what the teachers "preach."
Yes, we need progress, but is giving someone a grade,
for words on a paper, right?
How do even know what the right answers are to these
questions?
That's because, there are no right answers.
No right way to say something.

Sixth Graders Become Lawyers!

One Topic, Two Mediums

The Holocaust
By: Makayla Caldero (Union)

By: Jasmine Archibald (Columbia) and Jenayah

Shearn (NYU)

According to six graders, Ms.Paula and Ms Di

Lone, or should one say, Judge Paula and DiLone,
have been letting their students become lawyers in a
courtroom. Students were debating on topics like
Should cell phones be allowed in school? and Is
television a good influence? Students were to be
divided into 3 different groups in which they would
work together and defend their side. The jury was
asked to listen and
ask questions that
would help Judge
Paula or Di Lone decide who would win
the case. There were
some serious debates
going on in the courtroom
that
week!

7th Grade
7th Grade Takes On a Classic!

In eighth grade, we finished reading a book

called Night by Elie Wiesel. The book was about a
Jewish boy, named Elie, who went through a difficult time in history. This book was based off of the
Holocaust also known as the tragic time in history
for Jews. After reading the book, we watched a
movie called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The
book was also about the Holocaust and a German
boy named Bruno, who was friends with a Jewish
boy named Shmuel. Both boys had
vastly different ideas and experiences during the Holocaust.
After experiencing these two
mediums, we wrote an essay comparing and contrasting the two- very
Common Core! Thanks to Ms.Lee,
Ms. Montera, and Ms. Mora! Its because of you we got to experience
how people felt during the Holocaust.
It helped us be empathetic towards their struggles.

By: Jessica BoyDoe and Akera Phillips (Cortland)

Even though we had math exams this week,

which wasnt very exciting- we were able to relieve
stress by reading Romeo and Juliet. We have only
read the first scene so far, but it was very interesting, and so dramatic! The vocabulary is complex
and takes us a long time to understand it. But, when
we get it, we realize every line reveals something
new.
To help students comprehend the book, we
read every line, person by person. Then we stop to
discuss the language and the gist
of each scene.
We also got a history lesson
about who Shakespeare was! At
the beginning of the unit, we wrote
an essay about why Shakespeare
is such a big deal. We found out
new things about Shakespeare
such as, his books have been
around for 400 years! What an accomplishment!
