UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


The chief purpose of this course is to help students understand their identity as American citizens and
how our nation operates. They will examine the geography of the United States and its national symbols
and landmarks.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given an interactive blank map of the United States, students will be able to locate major cities, bodies of water,
mountain ranges and rivers, with a 4 out of 4 on the rubric.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
2.17 Locate major cities, bodies of water, mountain ranges and rivers in the United States

Cities: Chattanooga, Knoxville, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, New York
City, Seattle, St. Louis, Washington D.C.

Bodies of Water: Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

Rivers: Colorado, Cumberland, Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio

Mountain Ranges: Alaska Range, Appalachian, Rockies

Desktop or Laptop Computer
Access to Internet Explorer
Access to http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm
Technology Integration
Students will use the website listed above to practice and achieve locating major cities, bodies of water,
mountain ranges and rivers in the United States.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of eachmajor cities, bodies of water, mountain ranges
and rivers in the United States by using an interactive map on
-http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm

Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.

This lesson is a continuation of TN social studies standard 2.17.

I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction: 10 minutes
To introduce the lesson project the website with a blank map of the United States on the front board of the
classroom.
Let Students look over the list of things they will locate and see how many they can get on their own.
As a class, identity key places that students may have been too.
Explain to the students that they will practice located the list of places on
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm.
Procedures:
AT THE COMPUTER (30 minutes)
Students will sit where a laptop or desktop computer is present.
Students will login and open Internet Explorer.
The Students will type in http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm into the browser.
Once the students are on the webpage, they will begin the Practice portion of the interactive map.
After they have completed that, the students will begin each level starting with beginner and moving all the way
to expert.
Closure: (5 MINUTES)
To close the lesson, open the webpage and review together with the class the major cities, bodies of water,
mountain ranges and rivers that the students just learned.
