Title of Project: Learning CPR: A Community Response To Critical Events

7.

Expected Project Start Date (Summer Semester /2015)

8.

Expected Project End Date (September /2015)

B. Abstract (worth up to 15 points): In a paragraph of at least 200 words, provide an overview (or
abstract) of your proposed Community Engagement Experiential Education Project. You might want to
address the key questions of Who, What, Where, When, and Why?
I plan to teach my first training with CERT on April 27 th 2015 or on May 7th 2015. My first of several CPR
hands only classes will be taught to youth from the Five County Association of Governments, given the
approval of my project. My project focuses on teaching basic hands only CPR courses to citizens
throughout Iron County but focusing on Enoch Township. I will hopefully be assisting John Higley or
Debra Frank of the CERT program here in Iron County. The CERT program provides natural disaster and
community first aid and CPR training. Aside from the CERT program, Enoch city has made their building
available for trainings that may take place once per week and advertised through the Enoch City
newsletter. These community CPR hands only training events will give citizens knowledge of the
appropriate steps to take in a cardiac emergency. Almost every day in Iron County an ambulance is
dispatched for a critical event. The ambulance service runs out of Cedar City which for most citizens of
Enoch is greater than 5 miles. Experts agree that every minute a person is in cardiac arrest without CPR,
decreases their chance of survival by 10 percent. It is very important that citizens are aware of life saving
techniques to save someones life. Lastly, I will be working with the American Red Cross, they will provide
co- teachers and materials needed to accomplish my trainings. Each CPR training will take roughly 5 to 8
hours to complete the course. Depending on how many attendees will be at the meeting, if it is a number
smaller than 10, we may finish in under 3 hours. If the number is greater, it could take 5- 8 hours to
complete these trainings. I hope to be able to provide at least 6 to 10 ten trainings within Iron County.
1.

Explain how the project connects with your personal motivations and career aspirations.

This project connects with my personal motivations and career aspirations by giving me an
opportunity to share my knowledge of life saving techniques with others. I worked in mental health for
almost 15 years and loved to see individuals and families work together to improve upon all aspects
of their lives. I want to continue to provide a service to people wherein they may find confidence to
engage in CPR if the situation ever called for it. When citizens are proactive they can rely more on
their abilities to act and follow through and less on those who may or not be there for a crisis situation.
I believe that this project will help out my career aspirations in the dental field by allowing me to
engage with the community and consulting in preventive care, like many doctors in the dental field are
doing already.
2.

Explain how the project ties in with concepts of community engagement.

Community engagement is all about recognizing that it takes the work of many people to accomplish
great tasks. Being engaged in your community means that you are providing some kind of service
that is furthering the benefit some aspect of the community. My project could potentially benefit
hundreds of people. Citizens would walk away from my trainings with the knowledge and ability to
perform life saving techniques that could extend the lives of many.

3.

Provide a timeline for completion of each step of the project.

My project would start either April 27th or May 7th with my first training. This will be the first of many
trainings that I will set up when my proposal is approved. As soon as the proposal is approved, I will
purchase skills cards and other miscellaneous material needed for the class such as disposable
gloves. I plan on completing my project before September 1 st of 2015, this will be the time when I am
anticipating college graduation.

4.

Provide a budget, with projected expenses and revenues, for your project.

My Budget is $500.00 which I have put aside from my grant money. I do not expect any revenues
during this project. These are the only real expenses I can think of because I personally own the CPR
manikins and associated training material.
5.

Explain how your personal strengths will help you complete your project.
The project will require me to have complete focus and determination. I believe that these are
personal strengths that I possess. When I put my mind to something, I usually follow through and do
so diligently. From 2011-2013, I served as program director at a rehabilitation center in Utah. Through
my leadership, we were able to attain JCHAO accreditation and also the AdvancED accreditation from
the northwest association of schools. My personal strengths are being timely, thorough, and flexible
and making things happen when there is more of a will than there is a way. I believe I have
developed leadership skills and communication skills to plan, set up and give trainings without
encountering any major problems.

6.

Explain how you will overcome your personal weaknesses and outside threats to complete your
project
A weakness I have is my hesitancy to teach these classes to people whom I do not know and who I
have never taught classes to. I need to make sure that I rehearse what I am going to say and stick to
the training. I will need to engage the audience and speak with them on a personal level. I will need
to get them to feel like they are having fun while learning these lifesaving techniques. I believe that
by having a more intimate relationship with my audience, it will help me overcome any fear I have of
teaching CPR courses to them. One outside threat of me not completing my project in time would be
if the CERT program did not allow me to participate with them in teaching or volunteering my time to
help teach CPR and other related programs. I will need to make sure that I have enough classes set
up independently of the CERT program. However, after speaking with the CERT director, he seems
very eager to help me succeed at finishing my project. I hope to gain the confidence in myself in
working with the public in this capacity. I hope to feel like the knowledge that I impart with my
participants will have a positive impact on their confidence and ability to perform CPR successfully in
a real life scenario.
