DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

Im Haritha Ramadorai and Im an undergraduate student majoring in Biomedical Engineering

and pre medical at Purdue University. Im interested in applying for M.D / Ph.D. program at
Duke School of Medicine.
It was during my freshmen year summer in high school that I decided to research about different
career options for my future. Around the same time my grandmother was suddenly rushed to the
emergency care after she had a sudden life threatening Epileptic Seizure. She was diagnosed
with Brain Tumor. The Neurosurgeon at the hospital explained about health risks associated with
the tumor and treatment procedure. I was overwhelmed after learning the complexity of
treatment and the risk associated. I stayed to support my grandmother for about forty five days
and learnt about the details of surgery, post-operative care and recovery. I admired the way the
doctor patiently listened and communicated with the patient and family members during different
stages of treatment. During this period, I also had an opportunity to visit the Emergency Room,
ICU, Labs, pharmacy, and gained insight of Hospital & Health Care. All these incidents inspired
me to consider taking up the profession of health care physician in the future.
During summer 2013, I volunteered at a medical camp for low wage workers organized by
KIMS Hospital and Indian Community Benevolent Fund (ICBF) in Qatar. I guided the visitors
through the various facilities at the hospital and helped them fill their medical history forms.
I was inspired by the modern technologies and equipments that aid in quick and accurate
diagnosis, and the way all the doctors at the hospital performed their duties during the medical
camp efficiently and effectively throughout the day.
Later, I decided to do Biomedical Engineering along with pre medical for my undergraduate as I
was passionate about getting a good insight about developing the health care industry by
applying designing concepts and engineering principles to medicine. Also, Biology and
Mathematics are my favorite subjects and Biomedical engineering seemed to be the best fit for
my interests.
My passion for science and technology motivated me to be an active member of Purdue
Universities Engineering Projects in Community Service Program, I worked with Indiana School
for Blind and Visually Impaired, West Lafayette, IN for the project. The goal of the project was
to design cost effective, portable, efficient mechanical device-magnifier along with an iOS
application to aid visually impaired school students.
Also, I volunteered for the Turtle Conservation Program organized by Qatar Petroleum,
Raslaffan, Qatar. This gave me an opportunity to work with a team of environmental engineers
and marine biologists, and learn lessons on turtle nesting identification, DNA sample collection
and satellite tracking.
Additionally, my leadership positon as the Office of Dean of Students Ambassador, requires me
to communicate with alumni, perspective students and current studnets at Purdue to help them
learn and succeed at Purdue University. As a member of the Community Standards board I have
had the reponsibilty to educate studnets about the Code of Conduct at the University and
500 Oval Drive Purdue University West Lafayette, IN 47907

implement the rules and regulations on campus. This has taught me to work effectively in a team,
understand problems faced by students, make proffesional decisions and to help students.
As Windsor Residence Hall Senator at Purdue University, I have communicated with the
residents and executive board members to stregthen and suppport the residence hall community.
This experience has taught me lessons on being a good listener and communicating effectively.
Also, being a part of Women in Engineering outreach programs leadership team at Purdue
University, I have mentored students of middle school and high school in Indiana for science
experiments and helped them understand about engineering, its proffesional disciplines and
career options.Interacting with students of different age groups has helped me improve my
leadership, teaching and communication skills.
Ranked among the top 10 medical universities in the nation by U.S News and World Report, I
certainly believe that Duke Universitys M.D / Ph.D. program will help me learn the science and
practice of diagnosis and treatment for various diseases and disorders that people are facing in
the world. The universities strong emphasis on research and my undergraduate degree in
Biomedical Engineering will help me conduct research in the field of medicine. I am intrigued by
the strong relations of the university with international health care centers and institutes around
the globe that provide students with opportunity to study abroad and complete residency in
different countries. Also, the universitys unique curriculum that provides its students
opportunity to care for patients during the second year of college, a full year earlier than most of
the other medical schools will help me gain practical knowledge and skill will help me in the
future.
Lastly, I believe that my academic qualification, communication skills and passion for the field
of medicine makes me an ideal candidate for getting admitted to Duke Medical School. Please
