Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Mindmap of ideas for your installation

Create a mindmap showing ideas of how you might install your video.
Define what type(s) of visuals you will use.
(Eg. video cameras, still cameras, hand crafted artwork, film, animation, digital technologies)

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Past and current video installation practice

From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas
in some way.
One should be a past practitioner, the other should be contemporary.
Past Practitioner
Name:
Biography

The Lumiere Brothers

Lumire brothers, French inventors and pioneer
manufacturers of photographic equipment who devised an
early motion-picture camera and projector called the
Cinmatographe

Images

Notes on their installation

The Lumiere brothers were the first people to do a public
showing of moving image. It was held in Paris in 1895 and
showed 10 short video approximately 50 seconds long each
How is it similar to your ideas?
As Lumiere brothers are massive pioneers in moving image
its hard to not take some similarities from their installations. I
want to have various different videos play one after another
similar to theirs.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Contemporary Practitioner
Name:

Bill Viola

Biography
Bill Viola is see as one of the leading artist in using
electronics, moving image and sound as a medium. His work
ushally looks at life, death and aspects of coincesness.
Images

Notes on their installation

Bill Violas installations are very creative especially with
sound and visuals. In his work titled The Quintet Series in
2000 he created four videos of people in slow motion. In
looked at facial expressions and movement and how they
look when spread over long episodes of time.
How is it similar to your ideas?
The way he sets up his work in my opinion is done really
well. Creating a void of darkness and having the screen
standing out create a really nice effect of space and depth. It
will be hard to create this in the area I am using because of
other work. I want to create the same effect of isolation
though, instead of visually I am going to try and do it with
audio. Cancelling out all other noises in the room and making
the viewer feel like they are in their own world.

Draw a series of thumbnail sketches showing ideas for your installation. Add labels to your diagrams to
identify equipment, where the image will be seen, where the audience will stand etc.

Sound design
What sound will your FMP / Productions have?
The main sound will be the music as it is a music video. The song is Breezeblock by Alt-J. There will
also be some sounds effects to set the mood at the begging and throughout the video.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

The sound is very important and some of them are at low frequencies so to get the full effect Im going
to use high quality sound cancelling headphones

Why?
I want the audience to be able to hear as much of the small detail as possible. Normal headphones may
not pick this up and if it is being played out loud a lot of sound and detail will be lost.

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
The lighting is going to be all natural for my installation. Some of the venues have adjustable lighting.

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Technological convergence
What is technological convergence?
Technological convergence is the tendency that as technology changes, different technological
systems sometimes evolve toward performing similar tasks

Will you be using this in your installation?

I will not be utalising it to its full abilty but my radio drama with be being played on an Ipad.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

How have the following influenced your ideas?

work of the artists you have researched

venue and facilites

lighting

sound

screens / projectors

speakers / headphones

All of the three artists I have

research have influent my work in
different ways. The Lumiere
brothers gave me a good idea of
how moving image was original
shown in its basic form. Bill Viola
show me that lighting and sound
can create an effect on the
audiences emotions and feelings
Lastly Douglas Gordon influence
how Im will present my visuals
with speed and taking moving
image in different directions and
looking at them from different
angles.
This is been a big part as the space
that I am given determines what I can
do with my installation. If its big I can
have bigger screens; if Im given a
small booth then I will have to down
size.
Lighting hasnt be a major impact
in my installation as I dont have a
lot of space. Also it could influnce
other peoples work in the
surrounding area

Sound is an important part of my

installation as I want people to feel
isolated using it. Especially the
radio drama as it is all sound and
some of the sounds are very subtle
This isnt a massive influence on my
installation as although the visuals are
key as long as they can be seen it
should be fine.
This is a big influence on my
installation. I want the headphones
to cancel out all other sound to
create the feeling of isolation and
to immerse the view into the story
of the radio drama and the visuals
of the movie.
