Summary
MIHAILO GAVRILOVIC, SCIENTIST, DIPLOMAT AND
THE FIRST STATE ARCHIVIST
Mihailo Gavrilovic was born in Aleksinac, educated in Knjazevac, Nish and
Belgrade, and completed his doctorate on University of Paris-Sorbonne. From
his early youth, he was devoted to studying foreign languages and was passionate
reader of historical classics. With his master-piece Milos Obrenovic he left a deep
impact in Serbian historiography. In historical science, he was also present with
his highly respected critics and reviews. For over a decade, Gavrilovic was head
of State Archives, building the foundation for Serbian archives. Uncertain times in
the Balkans took him away from historiography, and placed him in public service,
where he served Serbian national interests as a diplomat, until his death in 1924.
