LAB #2.1: ABSOLUTE VALUE OF A NUMBER

Teacher: ____________________

Part 1. Read and answer questions below.

DATE ___/___/_____

10 points

Whole numbers and their opposites are called integers. For example 4 and 4 are
integers. 4 and - 4 are also called opposites because they have a different sign. Another
example of opposites is 7 and -7. The positive number such as 4 or 7 is also called the
absolute value. The absolute value of a number represents the distance on the number
line from zero to a number. Because the distance is always positive, the absolute value
of any number is also always positive. The absolute value of any number

is

symbolized as n .
For example, the absolute value of 10 is 10 and it is written as 10 = 10. The absolute
value of 10 is 10 and it is written as -10 = 10. The absolute value of 0 is 0.

LAB #2.2: ADDITION OF SIGNED NUMBERS

Teacher: ____________________
Student: ______________________

DATE ___/___/_____

Part 1. Read and answer questions below.

10 points

Positive and negative numbers are called signed numbers. They include whole numbers,
fractions, decimals and their opposites. For example, {.. -2, -1.5, -1, 0, 0.5, 1, 2..} are
signed numbers. Whole numbers only and their opposites are called integers For
example, {.. -2, -1, 0, 1, 2..} are integers.
To add two integers that have the same sign is to add their absolute values and keep
their common sign. For example: 2 + 4 = 6
- 2 + (- 4) = - 6
To add two integers with different signs is to subtract the smaller absolute value from
the larger absolute value and keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.

expression represents. In evaluating an algebraic expression, follow these steps:
1. First, replace the variables (letters) with their specific values.
2. Second, simplify any expression within grouping symbols starting with the
innermost first.
3. Third, evaluate powers, which are expressions with exponents (-2)3 = -2(-2)(-2)= -8

16 = 4

LAB #5: MATHEMATICAL SENTENCES

Teacher: ____________________
Student: ______________________

DATE ___/___/_____

Part 1. Read and answer questions below.

10 points

Mathematical sentences include formulas, equations and inequalities.

Every sentence that contains a variable (letter) is called an open sentence.
For example, x + 10 = 13 is an open sentence because it contains variable x.
A sentence that has no variable is called a closed sentence or a statement.
For example, 3 + 10 = 13 is a closed sentence or a statement because variable x was
replaced by number 3.
Numbers that are used to replace a variable in an open sentence are called a
replacement set. For example, set of numbers {1, 2, 3} may be used as a replacement set
of an open sentence x + 10 = 13.
The numbers from the replacement set that make the sentence true represent the
solution set of an open sentence. For example, number 3 represents the solution set of
an open sentence x + 10 = 13.

Zero is called the identity element of addition or additive identity because when zero is
added to a number, the number remains unchanged.
For example, 4 + 0 = 4. The opposite of a number is called the additive inverse, because
the sum of a number and its opposite is zero. For example, 4 + (- 4) = 0 where 4 and -4
are additive inverses of each other.
The number 1 is called the multiplicative identity because any number multiplied by 1
remains unchanged. For example, 6 1 = 6.
The reciprocal of a number is called the multiplicative inverse because the product of any
number and its multiplicative inverse is 1. For example, 4

are multiplicative inverses of each other.

1
= 1, where 4 and
4

SOLUTION

1. Name additive identity and explain

2. Name additive inverse and explain
3. Name multiplicative identity and explain
4. Name multiplicative inverse and explain

It is 0, because -7 + 0 = -7
It is 7, because - 7 + 7 = 0
It is 1, because -7 1 = -7

Part 1. Read and answer questions below.

10 points

A property is a certain pattern of behavior shown by the numbers in an operation.

Commutative property of addition or multiplication states that the order of addition or
multiplication does not change the sum of addition or product of multiplication.
For example, 4 + 3 = 3 + 4 (answer is 7) in addition and 5 2 = 2 5 (answer is 10) in
multiplication.
Associative property of addition or multiplication states that the way three or more
numbers are paired or associated does not change the sum of addition or product of
multiplication. For example, 4 + (3 + 2) = (4 + 3) + 2 (answer is 9) in addition and
5 (2 3) = (5 2) 3 (answer is 30) in multiplication.
Distributive property states that multiplication can be distributed over addition or
subtraction. For example, 2 (3 + 4) is the same as (2 3) + (2 4). Both numerical
expressions produce the same answer 14. It means that 2 (3 + 4) = (2 3) + (2 4).

MODEL PROBLEM: Replace the question marks with the appropriate numbers in the
following expression and name the property involved: 4 (1 + 3) = (4 ?___) + (4 ?___)
HOW TO PROCEED

SOLUTION

1. Replace the question marks

with the numbers
2. Name the property

4 (1 + 3) = (4 1) + (4 3)
Since the problem shows the distribution of multiplication
over addition, it illustrates the Distributive property .
