Whole numbers and their opposites are called integers. For example 4 and 4 are
integers. 4 and - 4 are also called opposites because they have a different sign. Another
example of opposites is 7 and -7. The positive number such as 4 or 7 is also called the
absolute value. The absolute value of a number represents the distance on the number
line from zero to a number. Because the distance is always positive, the absolute value
of any number is also always positive. The absolute value of any number
is
symbolized as n .
For example, the absolute value of 10 is 10 and it is written as 10 = 10. The absolute
value of 10 is 10 and it is written as -10 = 10. The absolute value of 0 is 0.

Positive and negative numbers are called signed numbers. They include whole numbers,
fractions, decimals and their opposites. For example, {.. -2, -1.5, -1, 0, 0.5, 1, 2..} are
signed numbers. Whole numbers only and their opposites are called integers For
example, {.. -2, -1, 0, 1, 2..} are integers.
To add two integers that have the same sign is to add their absolute values and keep
their common sign. For example: 2 + 4 = 6
- 2 + (- 4) = - 6
To add two integers with different signs is to subtract the smaller absolute value from
the larger absolute value and keep the sign of the number with the larger absolute value.
.

Letters used in place of numbers are called variables. Expressions that contain
variables, numbers and symbols of operations are called algebraic expression.
For example, x + 7 is an algebraic expression.
Two algebraic expressions joined with the sign of equality represent an algebraic
equation. For example, x + 7 = 10 is an algebraic equation.
Two algebraic expressions joined with a sign of inequality represent an algebraic
inequality. For example, x + 7 10 is an algebraic inequality.
Verbal phrases can be translated into algebraic expressions. For example, verbal
phrase Four less than y is equal to five is translated into algebraic equation
y 4 = 5.

Zero is called the identity element of addition or additive identity because when zero is
added to a number, the number remains unchanged.
For example, 4 + 0 = 4. The opposite of a number is called the additive inverse, because
the sum of a number and its opposite is zero. For example, 4 + (- 4) = 0 where 4 and -4
are additive inverses of each other.
The number 1 is called the multiplicative identity because any number multiplied by 1
remains unchanged. For example, 6 1 = 6.
The reciprocal of a number is called the multiplicative inverse because the product of any
number and its multiplicative inverse is 1. For example, 4
