Essay
Purpose
The
inclusion
of
powerful
graphics
in
a
lesson
can
help
students
create
pictures
in
their
minds
or
chunk
information
into
meaningful
components.
The
graphics
presented
in
this
task
will
be
used
within
the
junior
high
library
media
center
instructional
program
to
meet
information
literacy
goals
as
described
in
the
Common
Core
State
Standards-English
Language
Arts.
The
image
of
the
circulation
desk
will
be
included
in
the
7th
grade
library
media
center
orientation
presentation
in
September.
This
picture
was
taken
with
an
iPhone
and
resized
edited
in
iPhoto
to
create
the
three
required
images.
The
second
group
of
images
will
be
utilized
with
students
in
grades
7-9
during
instruction
about
the
use
of
the
research
process.
The
scanned
image
of
the
research
process
was
developed
by
a
team
of
librarians
within
the
district
and
modeled
after
The
Big
6
approach
to
teaching
information
literacy
skills.
The
original
image
is
a
poster
created
in
Microsoft
Word
and
then
converted
into
a
.jpg.
The
information
presented
in
the
poster
is
a
visual
representation
of
how
a
patron
logs
into
their
library
account.
The
final
image
from
an
outside
source
is
a
graphic
representation
of
The
Big
model.
Audience
The audiences for the instructional lessons in the library media center are students
in
grades
7-9
and
their
classroom
instructors
at
a
suburban
junior
high
school.
The
following
demographic
data
was
obtained
from
the
Office
of
the
Superintendent
of
Public
Instruction
(OSPI)
for
the
state
of
Washington.
51.8%
of
the
800
students
are
male
and
48.3%
are
female.
The
majority
of
the
students
are
white
(66.1%).
The
next
largest
group
is
the
13.6%
Hispanic
population.
8.6%
of
the
students
identify
as
Asian
or
Pacific
Islander
and
8.5%
are
Asian.
The
remaining
population
consists
of:
6.8%
of
the
student
who
identify
as
2
or
more
races,
4.0%
black,
0.9%
American
Indian
or
Alaskan
Native
and
0.1%
Native
Hawaiian
or
Other
Pacific
Islander.
Other
noteworthy
data
includes
the
23.4%
of
students
who
receive
free
or
reduced
lunch,
the
13.4%
of
the
population
who
qualifies
for
special
education
services
and
3.3%
of
the
students
who
are
considered
transitional
bilingual.
Process
All work for this task was produced using a MacBook Air, the standard software and
provide
the
size
of
the
photo.
If
the
photo
does
not
meet
the
640
x
480
requirement,
repeat
the
process.
These
resizing
steps
will
be
repeated
for
the
cropped
and
the
adapted
image
after
they
have
been
edited.
To create the cropped image, one needs to return to the original image in the iPhoto
album
and
double
click
to
open
the
click
on
Edit
on
the
bottom
right
of
the
screen.
Go
to
the
Quick
Fixes
in
the
upper
right
hand
corner,
click
to
open
and
Crop
will
appear
as
one
of
the
choices.
Click
on
the
word
crop.
One
will
then
be
able
to
click
and
drag
over
the
image
to
capture
the
desired
area.
Click
done
when
cropping
is
complete.
To
resize,
follow
steps
listed
in
the
previous
paragraph.
same
steps
listed
in
the
last
two
paragraphs.
First,
return
to
the
original
image
and
double
click
on
Edit
to
open
the
edit
window.
Then,
instead
of
clicking
on
Quick
Fixes
as
with
the
cropped
image,
click
on
Effects.
Click
on
B
&
W
to
change
the
image
to
black
and
white
as
displayed
on
the
Graphics
page
of
the
Technology
Portfolio
website.
Then
follow
the
resizing
steps
that
have
already
been
outline
in
this
document.
The scanned original (The Big6 Skills) was placed on a desktop scanner. Next, click
on
System
Preferences,
then
Printers
and
Scanners
and
select
the
scanner.
This
will
open
a
window
that
allows
one
to
adjust
settings,
name
the
document
and
then
scan
the
document.
The
document
needed
to
be
resized
in
order
to
meet
the
requirements
of
the
task.
iPhoto
was
used
to
accomplish
this
task.
First,
click
on
the
iPhoto
icon
in
the
dock,
go
to
the
menu
bar
and
select
File
-
New
Album
then
return
to
File
Import
to
Library
and
navigate
to
the
scanned
image.
Once
the
image
has
been
imported,
select
the
image
then
go
to
File-Export.
The
window
that
appears
next
allows
one
to
enter
dimensions.
Enter
640
and
then
click
on
the
Export
button.
Then
navigate
to
the
image,
depress
the
Control
Key,
select
Get
Info
this
will
provide
the
size
of
the
photo.
If
the
photo
does
not
meet
the
640
x
480
requirement,
repeat
the
process.
The original document was created using the graphic features within Microsoft
Word.
After
the
document
was
saved
it
was
necessary
to
format
it
as
a
.jpg.
A
free
website,
Zamzar,
was
used
for
this
conversion.
One
needs
to
merely
upload
the
image
to
Zamzar
and
follow
the
prompts.
A
converted
document
will
be
sent
directly
to
an
email
account.
Open
the
email,
download
the
image
to
the
desktop.
Follow
the
steps
previously
described
to
upload
the
image
into
iPhoto
and
complete
the
resizing
process.
The image from an outside source was downloaded from the Internet. This image
appears
in
many
places
however,
every
effort
was
made
to
utilize
the
image
directly
from
the
creators
website.
A
complete
citation
has
been
included
with
the
image
on
the
website
in
the
Technology
Portfolio.
This
image
was
also
uploaded
to
iPhoto
and
resized
using
the
processes
described
for
the
previous
images.
