Adding

Graphics to a Website

TDT1 Task 2 Essay

Purpose

The inclusion of powerful graphics in a lesson can help students create pictures in

their minds or chunk information into meaningful components. The graphics presented in
this task will be used within the junior high library media center instructional program to
meet information literacy goals as described in the Common Core State Standards-English
Language Arts. The image of the circulation desk will be included in the 7th grade library
media center orientation presentation in September. This picture was taken with an iPhone
and resized edited in iPhoto to create the three required images. The second group of
images will be utilized with students in grades 7-9 during instruction about the use of the
research process. The scanned image of the research process was developed by a team of
librarians within the district and modeled after The Big 6 approach to teaching information
literacy skills. The original image is a poster created in Microsoft Word and then converted
into a .jpg. The information presented in the poster is a visual representation of how a
patron logs into their library account. The final image from an outside source is a graphic
representation of The Big model.
Audience

The audiences for the instructional lessons in the library media center are students

in grades 7-9 and their classroom instructors at a suburban junior high school. The
following demographic data was obtained from the Office of the Superintendent of Public
Instruction (OSPI) for the state of Washington. 51.8% of the 800 students are male and
48.3% are female. The majority of the students are white (66.1%). The next largest group

is the 13.6% Hispanic population. 8.6% of the students identify as Asian or Pacific Islander
and 8.5% are Asian. The remaining population consists of: 6.8% of the student who
identify as 2 or more races, 4.0% black, 0.9% American Indian or Alaskan Native and 0.1%
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. Other noteworthy data includes the 23.4% of
students who receive free or reduced lunch, the 13.4% of the population who qualifies for
special education services and 3.3% of the students who are considered transitional
bilingual.
Process

All work for this task was produced using a MacBook Air, the standard software and

programs installed on the MacBook Air as well as Microsoft Office software.

For images a., b., and c as listed in Taskstream, iPhoto was utilized for the photo resizing
and editing to create the original image, the cropped image and the adapted black and
white image. The image was taken with an iPhone. The image was then sent via email so it
could be opened on the computer. The original image only needed to be resized in order to
meet the requirements of the task. First, click on the iPhoto icon in the dock, go to the menu
bar and select File - New Album then return to File
Import to Library and navigate to the image.
Once the image has been imported, select the
image then go to File-Export. The window that
appears next allows one to enter dimensions.
Enter 640, and then click on the Export button.
Then navigate to the to the image (for this exercise
the image was saved to the desktop), depress the Control Key, select Get Info, this will

provide the size of the photo. If the photo does not meet the 640 x 480 requirement, repeat
the process. These resizing steps will be repeated for the cropped and the adapted image
after they have been edited.

To create the cropped image, one needs to return to the original image in the iPhoto

album and double click to open the click on Edit on the bottom right of the screen. Go to the
Quick Fixes in the upper right hand corner, click to open and Crop will appear as one of the
choices. Click on the word crop. One will then be able to click and
drag over the image to capture the desired area. Click done when
cropping is complete. To resize, follow steps listed in the previous
paragraph.

To create the adapted image, one will follow many of the

same steps listed in the last two paragraphs. First, return to the
original image and double click on Edit to open the edit window.
Then, instead of clicking on Quick Fixes as with the cropped image,
click on Effects. Click on B & W to change the image to black and white as displayed on the
Graphics page of the Technology Portfolio website. Then follow the resizing steps that have
already been outline in this document.

The scanned original (The Big6 Skills) was placed on a desktop scanner. Next, click

on System Preferences, then Printers and Scanners and select the scanner. This will open a
window that allows one to adjust settings, name the document and then scan the
document. The document needed to be resized in order to meet the requirements of the
task. iPhoto was used to accomplish this task. First, click on the iPhoto icon in the dock, go
to the menu bar and select File - New Album then return to File Import to Library and

navigate to the scanned image. Once the image has been imported, select the image then go
to File-Export. The window that appears next allows one to enter dimensions. Enter 640
and then click on the Export button. Then navigate to the image, depress the Control Key,
select Get Info this will provide the size of the photo. If the photo does not meet the 640 x
480 requirement, repeat the process.

The original document was created using the graphic features within Microsoft

Word. After the document was saved it was necessary to format it as a .jpg. A free website,
Zamzar, was used for this conversion. One needs to merely upload the image to Zamzar and
follow the prompts. A converted document will be sent directly to an email account. Open
the email, download the image to the desktop. Follow the steps previously described to
upload the image into iPhoto and complete the resizing process.

The image from an outside source was downloaded from the Internet. This image

appears in many places however, every effort was made to utilize the image directly from
the creators website. A complete citation has been included with the image on the website
in the Technology Portfolio. This image was also uploaded to iPhoto and resized using the
processes described for the previous images.
