2014 has been full of blessings and intentions for LArche Portland, and we hope to reap the benefits in the
years to come.
Our Board continues to plan how best to serve aging core members and prepare LArche Portland for organizational growth and extended community-building work. Over the past 12 months, we have laid the foundations
for that growth in our new leadership. Andy Noethe, Executive Director since 2013, is gathering a dynamic
team and restructuring roles to fit this forward-thinking vision.
Our Sign of Hope Campaign is in its third and final year, helping ensure that assistants and support staff have a
just salary, our homes reflect the beauty of the people who live there; our capacity to serve more people increases, and our outreach efforts around Portland grow. I wish to thank all of our supporters, including those
who joined our Sign of Hope Campaign, became monthly donors to provide a consistent stream of revenue for
our mission, or made their very first donation to LArche Portland in 2013-14.
I hope every supporter recognizes how essential their contribution of time, talent and treasure are to our work
of creating home and building community for people with and without intellectual disabilities. You are more
than a part of our success; you are investors in our homes, our growth and our collective call to action.
This was a busy year in community outreach, invitation and celebration. We have been fortunate to welcome
new assistants, substitute caregivers, and volunteers into our community. These friends bring new life and perspective and help us grow and learn. From our Christmas tree sales to home tours to speaking engagements in
the community, LArche Portland has been actively inviting new friends into our mission. Our homes have welcomed volunteers and friends for dinner, Taize prayer and milestone gatherings. Our annual Benefit Concert
with Julianne Johnson and Michael Allen Harrison this past October celebrated our work together, provided
opportunities to meet each other in community, and of course raised general operating funds. In November,
over 100 people joined us at the University of Portland for a community discussion about vulnerability. We
explored the concept of Becoming Human as introduced by LArche founder Jean Vanier along with the challenges and opportunities that embracing vulnerability presents us in our personal and professional lives.
As always, our core members live at the heart of our community and we give thanks for the many gifts
they bring to our lives daily. Joni, Adam, Marilyn, Erin, Ben, Rodney, Robyn, and Cindy inspire all of us
Board, assistants, leadership, volunteers, and friendsto live more authentically and from the heart. LArche Portland remains, more than ever, a continued sign of hope to the Portland area and the greater region. I am excited for the future we can build together with your help.
Assistant Welcome and Formation: LArche Portland welcomed four new assistants and a substitute caregiver to share life with core members, (adults
with intellectual disabilities) in our homes. We provided supports and training
to help these young leaders develop and sustain long-term relationships with
our core members. A $9,000 grant from the Storms Family Foundation helped
provide formation opportunities for assistants on topics such as Self-Care, LArche Spirituality, Solidarity, Conflict, Person Centered Planning, Rules of Cooperation, Core Member
Focus, Leadership, and Team Dynamics among others.
Community Leaders in Solidarity: LArche Portlands Andy Noethe joined dozens of LArche leaders from around the globe in France for a formation led by LArche founder Jean
Vanier. "L'Arche has never been my work... it is God's work, said Vanier. I hope that you
feel the same thing. That you are a part of something much bigger."
Match from B.P., Lester, and Regina John Foundation: We are in the 2nd year of a 3-year
$60,000 matching grant, empowering us to reach new donors and invite them into our
mission. We thank everyone who became a new donor or increased their monthly pledge.
