E-Learning Module Proposal

Introduction:
The e-learning proposed plan will be to educate a student enrolled in a Computer Maintenance
degree of the proper methods for extending a Computer life. The benefit of this training could be
any learner that wants to know how to maintain their Personal Computer (PC). The instructions
to follow will be given in a manner where an end-user of a PC could benefit from such training.
The material covered in this training will aid a learner in taking the proper steps to help prevent
excessive temperatures of a computer to exceed to a thermal breakdown which might leave a PC
unusable. The student will learn the mechanics that make the computer system a whole package,
once they are aware of the physical equipment the student will be given tips and information of
the items or issues that can create a thermal melt down on their system. After the basics
preventive maintenance and basic construction of a PC, the learner will learn about the operating
system (OS) and how to maintain it so that it can work at its optimal performance. The learner
will learn to acknowledge threads that come in the way of computer viruses, adware, spyware
and such via sharing of data. The last topic presented will be of the ability to extend a computer
by the means of upgrades. Upon the completion of this study a learner would have gained the
basic information to extend the life of a computer.
Instructional Goal and Objective:
Instructional Goal:
The learner that completes this training will be able to understand what can keep their computers
working for many years to come by performing preventive maintenance. The learner will have
the skill to keep their computer running error free and at its optimal speed by knowing what the
OS does and how to keep that OS running error free by keeping the OS lean and clean. The
learner will learn the potential dangers of sharing data via a USB drive and downloading data
from the internet. The final bit of information that a learner which goes through the training will
be receiving is the benefits of upgrading the hardware of a computer.
Sub Goal 1:
The student will learn the general instruction of how to do preventive maintenance on a desktop
computer.
Objective 1.1: Students will learn what makes up a computer. Identifying the components inside
a computer that can be damaged if not maintained

Objective 1.2: Students will learn the pros and cons on the most stationary place people set up a
computer up for their daily operation.
Objective 1.3: Students will learn how to properly keep the inside and outside of a computer
clean and free from any obstructions
Objective 1.4: Student will learn what tools are required to keep a PC free of any thermal
blankets.
Sub Goal 2:
The student will learn how to maintain /optimize a computers operating system. (We will be
working with windows 7 on a IBM clown PC.)
Objective 1.1: Students will learn what the operating system does for a computer
Objective 1.2: Student will learn how to remove services that start at startup to avoid a slow
booting computer and clear Browsing History in Internet Explorer.
Objective 1.3: Students will learn how to clean house in their operating system by removing
temporary files, folder, pictures and old programs.
Objective 1.4: Students will learn how to use Microsoft tools such as disk clean up and disk
defragmenter to allow for the OS to work at its optimal speed.
Sub Goal 3:
The student will learn what potential danger comes with sharing information via the internet and
by file transferring via USB
Objective 1.1: Students will learn the terminology of what is adware, spyware, virus, worms and
root kits.
Objective 1.2: Students will learn the basic procedures one can take to avoid becoming infected
with a computer virus, phishing scheme and how to keep their PCs running clean of these items
Objective 1.3: Students will learn what some of the pesky messages mean when surfing the
internet and looking into what a virus infected usb drive can have if connected to their PC.
Objective 1.4: Students will learn the importance of keeping an updates OS and keeping their
antivirus and antispyware up to date with the their definitions.

Sub Goal 4:

The student will learn of the advantages in upgrading the hardware inside their computers (e.g.
Hard drives, Optical drives, Power supplies, RAM, etc...)
Objective 1.1: Students will learn the different components that make up a computer. They will
learn of the different computer parts that makes a computer operate the way the end users are
accustom of.
Objective 1.2: The students will learn what each component inside a computer helps a PC do and
the importance of it.
Objective 1.3: The student will learn the benefits of updating the internal components can aid
when using a computer in their everyday usage.
Intended Audience:
The participants expected to attend the training would be comprised of STCs Technology
campus students and faculty. Since this training will be done at the technology campus the
expected majority of participants would be male Hispanic between ages of 18 and 60 years of
age.
Demographics
Given on the graph below is the demographic make of STCs students in accordance to State
University.com web site. The majority of students as we can see by this graph are that of females
with the ethnicity of being Hispanic. The technology campus reflects something different from
this chart; it is comprised of 90% male and 10% female, the ethnicity is the same as shown. At
the technology campus, the classes thought are mainly male oriented classes. The classes given
are technical and trade type classes which for whatever reason are viewed as male role type
training.

Experience Level, Skills, and Attitude

The level of expertise would be from a freshman in college to a faculty member of our school.
The training will be given in a entry level discussion in order to make it simple for all to
comprehend and to keep up with material covered. Skills required prior to the training would be
for the participant to have basic adding, subtracting and multiplication skills and simple
computer user skills such as have worked with computers. The only attitude needed for this
training is a willingness to learn and a focus in the moment of instruction.
Learning Environment and Context:
The mini seminar or training will be given at the STC Technology campus in McAllen, Texas.
The training would take place in one of our four lab room which would support the materials
needed such as computers, internet access, and parts for the show and tell section of the
training. These rooms are equipped with twenty computers, dry erase boards, projectors and a
supply room which have computer parts. The computers used for this training would be from a
personal computers working with an operating system of Windows 7, we would not be talking of
the difference between the many companies aside from general information of a small history of
computers. The main focus would be placed on software, hardware and applications that can aid
in keeping a PC running at optimal speeds.
Performance Context
The training would be presented in a multiple setting for about an hour. The training would be
spread in a matter of a week in order to allow multiple session to take place, this could allow for
a maximum of 100 people to take full advantage of the training throughout a week. The training
would require the participant to sign up for a session one week prior to the training in order to
make the proper arrangements and to make sure there would be room for sitting. The training
would start at 5:30 in the evening every day in order to allow the participants that work the time
to be present.
Summary:
The goal of this training is to educate the attendees of what to look for when purchasing a
computer or what to do once they have a PC that would give a user the best and most use of that
PC. The end result of the training is to have the attendees gain knowledge of what makes a
computer work error free and with the clock work precession they had come to expect as when
their systems were new from the manufacture. The learner will know the benefits of scanning a
computer for viruses, adware, and there OSs for problems with every day operations. The learner
will know the dangers of data sharing from USB drives to drives and the potential dangers of the
internet. In the training the learner will have learned what components inside a computer affects
the performance of a computer and what they can do to make them better.
