ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE (TWO WAY)

Examples:

1. An automobile testing service tests four different automobiles for gasoline mileage. The
cars are run over diffferent terrains and the gasoline mileage is recorded. The data are
shown in the accompanying table. From the data below, (a) do the cars differ with respect
to gasoline mileage? (b) do the terrains produce different gasoline mileages?

TERRAIN CAR
I II III IV
A 20.6 28.1 19.2 21.1
B 19.2 20.6 21.4 21.2
C 21.9 23.0 22.0 29.3

2. An industrial engineer engaged in an eye-focus-experiment has five subjects and asks

each to focus on an object at distances of 4, 6, 8, and 10 feet. The measurement made is
the time for the eye focus (which has been coded in the following data).

6 7 6 6 1 6
8 5 3 3 2 5

a. Show the ANOVA and decide whether the subjects differ with respect to eye-focus time
or not.
