COMMAS
Comma Guidelines:
1. Use commas to set off items in a series of three or more.
a. Of the letters X, Y, and Z.
2. Use commas to set off coordinate adjectives not joined by and.
a. The tired, ambitious clerk usually worked through lunch and stayed late.
3. Use a comma before a coordinate conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) in a compound sentence.
a. I am not complaining, but I am stating my opinion.
4. Commas are usually used after introductory words, phrases, and clauses.
a. When you leave today, remember your umbrella.
b. Furthermore, I would like you to mow the lawn.
5. Use commas around words, phrases, and clauses that interrupt the flow of a sentence (and are not essential).
a. She was, however, too tired to continue studying.
b. My sister, who lives in Tallahassee, is a talented artist.
6. Use commas to set off contrasted elements, geographical names, and most items in dates.
a. Cats, but not dogs, own themselves.
b. Maria was born in Rockledge, Florida, on August 16, 2002, at 10:20 p.m.
7. Use commas in full, direct quotes, not indirect, complimentary quotes. Commas always go before a quotation mark.
a. I wont know what to do, said Mike, if you leave me.
b. To be or not to be is a famous line from Shakespeares Hamlet.

Insert commas as needed in the following sentences. Not all sentences need commas.
1. Laura was tired exhausted and frustrated after such a busy day.
