Name Christina Mastrofilippo

Grade Level: 5
Subject: Math
Special Needs: Dyslexia

Stage 1 Desired Results

Topic: Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Content Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators
(including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a
way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For
example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
Prior Knowledge: What do students already know about the concept?
Students know about adding, subtracting and what a fraction is.
Understandings:
Students will understand that
Fractions must have common
denominators in order to add and
subtract them
What you do to the numerator must
also be done to the denominator in
order to have an equivalent fraction

Essential Questions:
Why is it necessary to have common
denominators before adding and
subtracting fractions?
Why are least common multiples
important to finding common
denominators?

Students will know

Various terms such as numerator,
denominator, least common
multiple

Students will be able to

Add and subtract fractions
To use the least common multiple to
create common denominators

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

Performance Task:

Other Evidence:

Pop Quiz found in Prezi along with

comments, questions and additional
strategies sheet
In class examples

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Learning Activities:

For homework, students will review a Prezi consisting of text and videos introducing
the topic of adding and subtracting fractions taking notes along the way.
Then, they will complete several example problems and write down any comments or
questions they had. In addition, students will bring any additional strategies they found
useful to share with the class.
To begin class, students will be divided into small groups.
In their groups, students discuss their experience with the online lesson sharing their
comments, questions and additional strategies.
Then, as a class, we will have a review of the topic. Students will be able to share
some main points from their small group discussion.
Then, students will practice additional examples surrounding adding and subtracting
fractions.
Fraction bar manipulatives will be available to students to use as a visual aid to
represent their fractions.
While students are in their groups, I will go around to answer questions and clear up
any misconceptions. I will also providing mini lessons to anyone who needs additional
support.
