MAKE SURE YOU GO SOMEWHERE

YOU IDENTIFY WITH. DON'T JUST
PICK A SCHOOL BECAUSE OF ITS
NAME, PRESTIGE AND HISTORY.

By: Eduardo Nunes

People always talk so greatly

about the Ivy League schools,
crediting their academic prestige and famous names, but
many don't really know what
the Ivy League is in the first
place.
The Ivy League was originally
nothing but an intercollegiate
athletic conference, founded
officially in 1954, which had as
its members, some of the oldest universities in the United
States. All Ivy League schools
were established during the
USA's colonial period, except
for Cornell. This gave all these
schools time to grow, develop,
get rich and become some of
the world's most famous institutions of higher learning.
As time passed by, this branded name developed into a
phenomenon which today has

everything to do with academic

prestige, social elitism and is
recognised all around the world
as a synonym for professional
success. However, there are
definitely some other schools
that are not Ivies, that will still
provide an almost equal, perhaps even better education.
Below, you see information on
some of the nation's top schools
that are not Ivies:

Duke- located in Durham,

NC, Duke is a reference for academic excellence, having some

of the top ranked programs in
the country, including its Pratt
School of Engineering and
its Fuqua Graduate School of
Business. Located less than 30
minutes away from Raleigh and
Chapel Hill, Duke is located in
North Carolina's research triangle, allowing Duke students to
be in contact with major com-

category. The list could go on and on forever...

panies and thriving start-ups.

Notre Dame- South Bend,

a small town in the middle of

rural Indiana may not look
like the most exciting place to
live, but with all the University
of Notre Dame can offer you,
ranging from top notch education to extra-curricular activities and amazing school spirit
and sports teams, it definitely
would not hurt a single bit to
spend four years of your life
there.

UC Berkeley- overlooking

the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley

is truly a beautiful place. Just
a few minutes away from California's largest cities like San
Francisco and Oakland, but
also close enough to the mighty
mountains and hills, which are
a signature of NorCal. The campus is also really close to some
of the world's leading compa-

nies' headquarters providing

great internship and job opportunities for Cal's graduates.

Stanford- rival to the

be "the Harvard of the South",

Vandy maintains its reputation
by having small classes, permitting students to have one to one
talks with professors and lecturers. Nashville, being located
close to the centre of the United
States, is home to many headquarters, including Nissan's and
UBS' and also Amazon's distributing centre.

school above, its campus has

been described as "The Farm".
With approximately 8,180 acres
of land, the Stanford campus in
sunny California is the birthplace of some of the world's
largest companies. Yahoo, Instagram, HP and several other
technological companies were
developed in the dorms and
quads of this amazing institution. With great tradition in
sports, once a year, the Cardinal of Stanford battle fiercely
against their arch-rivals California Golden Bears(UC Berkeley's team) in the "Big Game",
one of the most improbable and
historic games in all of American College Sports.

is constantly ranked among

America's top public universities. Home to over 40,000 students, this institution combines
excellent academics with vivid
campus life. Among so many
talented and motivated young
adults, there will always be an
opportunity to learn, teach and
experience unforgettable moments- both academically and
socially.

Vanderbilt- considered to

Wake Forest- one of the

Michigan- the "Big House"

few schools that with only 4,000

students manages to stand out
in the national and international rankings. Wake is a great
place to combine a solid liberal
arts curriculum with a specific
major you might be interested
in. With top notch facilities
throughout all aspects of the
institution, this university is
a centre of excellence in the
areas of sciences, languages and
many more.
This article is not an attempt
to demotivate anyone, but to
encourage people to open their
minds and understand that
there are plenty of universities out there which will still
provide you with an excellent
education and prepare you for
future jobs and initiatives.
These are just a few schools that
fit into the "Alternative Ivies"

Making Faces

Amazon review: 4.8/5 stars

It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of
friendship that defeats sorrow and heroism that defies the

the unique and memorable characters.

This is truly a beautiful love story about a boy, who plays
his guitar every night on his balcony, and a girl, who lives
across from him and writes the words to his songs. You
will laugh out loud and your heart will melt. The cool thing
about this book is that there is an amazing soundtrack
that was made especially for this book (the links are in the
chapters) making the story come to life.

Slammed

Amazon review: 4.6/5 stars

This book tells the story of eighteen-year-old Layken, who has to step up and be

Anna and the

French Kiss

Amazon review: 4.6/5 stars

Anna has a pretty good life: a
great best friend, a job and a developing crush. However, things
change when her dad sends her to
boarding school in Paris, which
she is not excited about. But when
she meets Etienne St. Clair (the
perfect guy), her mood lightens
again, even though he is taken
(and she kind of is too). The title
might seem childish, but the book
is actually funny, dramatic and
full of sarcasm.

There have been a lot of people lately wanting
to know about my experience in China. What
is it about China that is so mysteriously alluring? Is it the fact that it is on the opposite side
of us making it an opposite universe? Maybe its
to see if the stereotypes are true about the super
smart Chinese kids or that all Chinese people
are kung fu masters. When people ask me about
China, they expect me to answer in a couple of
words. This is impossible. How can you possibly sum up a country with an area of 9,596,961
km^2 and more than 1.35 billion people? To
answer your question, I have met my share of
smart Chinese people and I have also met Chinese kids with a mediocre intellectual level.
Martial arts to China is the same as football to
Brazil. Now that the important questions (apparently) are out of the way, China is a country
with many different biomes and areas that differ

from one to other.

I personally lived in Beijing, which is the capitol of China and the neck of the chicken. I have
travelled to Guilin, Shanghai, Harbin,Xian and
Pingyao. Like I said before, none of these provinces are anything like each other except for the
language. Now before I get into detail, there are
many rules and important details that go for all
of China. The biggest obstacle you will find is
the language. The Chinese language has no alphabet; this makes the language close to impossible.
Food and dining etiquette are also very important in China. Chinese food is nothing like the
expensive Chinese cuisine you find here in
Brazil. A typical Chinese dish is spicy, fried and
delicious! If you dont like rice or noodles, all

I can say is good luck mate! Chinese table etiquette is an art; it is so complex and deep in
meaning. Lucky for you, I will teach you the basics. Chinese tables are round and fit up to eight
people. We are used to rectangular tables showing the importance of the people at the ends, soa
round table means everybody is equally important. China is the same, right? Wrong. In China,
a round table shows the importance of people.
The person sitting furthest away from the table
is the most important, making the person clos-

est to the entrance the least important who also

has to pay the bill. If being the least important
wasnt bad enough, (am I right?) I know everybody likes a cold beverage after walking a long
way to find an acceptable restaurant, in China
they prefer hot water or tea. When you dine
you will be served tea (with free refill!). When
the tea lady or man comes around to serve you
tea you say Xie Xie which means thank you
in Chinese. Important note though, if you are
talking to somebody and the tea lady serves you

tea you never ever stop the conversation to say

Xie Xie, instead you tap the table with two fingers twice. This came from an old story about
a king and two imperial guards who went undercover to investigate a criminal at a restaurant. When the king served his guards tea, they
couldnt bow down to him or else they would
blow his cover, instead they used their fingers
to act out the bowing down motion. Neat right?
You will always have to eat with chopsticks at
any Chinese restaurant, so start practicing now.
If you decide to stop eating or take a break from
eating, do not ever stick your chopsticks in the
rice. This means that you dont like the rice and
you want the worker who picked the rice dead.
Flipping the fish to eat the meat on the other
side also means you want the boat to flip over
and kill the fishermen. You will get a lot of funny looks from people, trust me I have first hand
experience.
Who goes to China and doesnt go on a shopping
rampage? Yes, China is a place of bargaining and
buying things from the street or even shopping
malls, but you have to be careful. What you buy
in markets or even in shopping malls are most
likely fake, no matter how expensive they sell you
the item. For example Samsung in China is very
different. Do not buy android phones in China
because the Google Play store is blocked and the
phone is most likely a Samsung phone you have
never even heard of. Apple is the only reliable
place to buy anything to do with technology
in China. Fancy clothing brands in China cost
the same price as they would here in Brazil and
they are most likely fake, so hold your horses.
The Chinese market places are very interesting.
Dont think you are the bargaining master before you go to China because, you will get baited in to many different types of traps. It is important that you know how to say something in
Chinese to make them think that you live there
because they will sell you a shirt for 100 Yuan,
which is about $20 and fake. I am not telling you
to go up to the vendor and start yelling NI HAO,
XIE XIE! This will make you look like a maniac

and let the vendor know that you are a definite

foreigner. Tai Gui La, this means too expensive,
Pian Yi Yi Dian. A little bit cheaper, but no, hao
yes, Duo Shao Qian? how much does it cost?,
and the one you will use the most is dont have
or dont need.
Restrictions in China will give many people a
heart attack when arriving and not knowing
the laws. As some of you know Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Are all blocked.
There are many people I personally know who
will slowly die and become weak without constantly sending messages and posting silly pictures of themselves for more than two days. I

recommend you stay home if you are not willing to give that up. China is a spiritual journey;
the only way to stay in touch with everything is
if you dont stay in touch at all. There are also
many parts in China that are covered in pollution. The Chinese government does not inform
the Chinese people about it but I am informing you! If you see dense grey fog, its best you
remain inside or not do any physical activities
outdoors. There are many websites that tell you
the pollution of Chinese areas. Be sure to keep
those handy at all times.
Thats enough of basic rules, what are the different areas in China like? Lets start with a question; what do foreigners think of when you say
China? They think
about The Great
Wall of China, the
Forbidden City, and
Tiananmen Square.
These three are all
found in Beijing. Beijing is a very historical city but also very
technological. When
walking through the
streets you find people practicing Tai Chi,
which is the yoga of
martial arts. It is not
the martial arts you
see in the corny martial arts movies with
Bruce Lee or Jet Li, it

is a softer but requires balance and inner peace.

Next to the people that are doing Tai Chi, which
originated in 1580, are Chinese businessmen
running late for their meeting in the CCTV
tower. Living in Beijing is a culture shock that
lasts for a foreigners whole life.
Harbin is the pearl of the chicken according
to Chinese people. I have never heard of this
place you must be saying. Well you know Disney Land right? Well imagine that, completely
made out of ice and under 30 degrees Celsius.
Welcome to Harbin! Harbin is popular for its
ice festival in the winter. Be sure to bring many
jackets though, -30 is tough with a shirt and
shorts. It also has a lot of Russian influence due
to the location being close to Russia.
Xian is called the prologue of Beijing. The city
is very touristic with its city wall and terracotta
warriors and great food. The great thing about
Xian is that you can get around using a bike. It
is also a very cultural city with towns that are
hundreds of years old that are still in use by
towns people.
As you can tell already, China has very different
social standards than many parts of the world. It
is also unbelievable to think that a country with
1.35 billion people is still flourishing and keeping its historical culture intact. I really enjoyed
my 3 years in China and hope that one day I
go back and tour the places I have didnt get a
chance to go to. Hopefully next time you plan
on going anywhere, its China!

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvels movie of the year. This movie turned unknown characters mocked by comic book readers into
iconic ones, being a fully quotable blockbuster packed
with funny moments and action sequences, that finally showed Thanos (the blue and evil Josh Brolin) as a
proper character. Guardians of the Galaxy surprised
everyone, revived 80s musical hits with its soundtrack
Awesome Mix Vol. 1 , created major hysteria in my
social media timelines and simply kicked ass!
Boyhood
My most awaited movie of 2014, known for taking 14
years to be filmed, it deserves all the awards it receives
by its unconventional and arduous filming time span
intended to show aging actors and its realism when
depicting a boy's early years. Many people didn't like
the movie because it didn't have a clear plot which, in
my opinion, is clearly intentional in order to realistically show the development of a family throughout
the years. As I am going
through the stages
depicted by this film in
my life, I identify with
many of the protagonist's thoughts and
experiences, showing
to be an authentic
account of growing up.
Check out one of the
songs from this film's
soundtrack, Hero, it
is an extension of the
movie's essence.

Movies

2015: a fresh new slate to be written on, a brand

new 35 mm reel to be filmed, a year to continue our personal projects , the year which Marty McFly travelled to in Back to the Future II
and, above all, the year that dates the debut of
Star Wars 7 (Yes!). Before moving on to this
brand new exciting year of discoveries (and
political boycotts) I created a list of my last
years favourites, in no particular order or
number, trying my best to avoid overrated Oscar movies by picking meaningful
films to me as a mere spectator. These
are films which changed my optics
over certain things or uplifting movies
watched during downhearted moments so a few of
these maybe arent last
years essentials, but
are still worth a
watch!
Chef & Begin Agian

These are two similar movies so

I put them together, in what I
call an "Uplifting Movie Couple".
These films explore the pleasures
of life: food and music! "Chef "
being a culinary road trip movie and "Begin Again" an urban
recommencing music-revolved
plot, both telling these stories
in a humorous way and, above all, being inspirational
movies far off from Hollywood plot templates.

Nightcrawler
This movie is presented to the public in a different
way to what the actual plot leads us to, making it
a surprising drive to the underground night crime
journalism world. In my opinion the real high point of
this movie is the protagonist, Lou (Jake Gyllenhaall),
a truly unique character in my cinematic knowledge:
a resourceful and heartless entrepreneur powered by
greed, a true trickster amid urban violence. A subtle
point this film makes is how the internet allows anyone almost any knowledge nowadays, it's just a matter
of being pro active, as Lou is in order to learn his new
skills throughout the movie

Frank
A less known movie with Michael Fassbender in the
leading role. This film stands out for its visual weirdness, a man that uses a Papier-mch cartoon head
to hide his face, this same unconventional tone is set
throughout the whole movie. It tells the story of a
young boy playing in a band with a peculiar musical
style, in which
all members
worship this
man named
Frank.
The film offers
a reflection into
mental illness
and understanding, in a slightly
comical way. It's
cinematic indie
film look, the
weird characters
and situations
captivated my
indie heart !

The Hobbit:
The Battle of
Five Armies
This movie closes
Peter Jackson's
cinematic universe saga for the
time being on
a grand scale. I
loved the separation of a small
book like The
Hobbit into three
films! Perhaps
not for the actual quality of the plot, but simply to enjoy the Lord of the Rings style movies for a bit longer.
I re watched the movie just to relish its overall production such as: soundtrack, colouring, costume design
as well as the epic scenes which make audiences cheer
and laugh! *flying Legolas*

The Grand
Budapest Hotel
Sorry, I really tried to avoid Oscar nominated movies,
but I couldn't leave this one behind. To me, this film
is a high point of Wes Anderson's filmmaking style
(which a few hate, some love): colourful contrasting
set and costume designs, symmetrical shots, caricatured characters, just to list some of the features of this
fantastic universe created by him and his crew. This
film is film is almost a child's story for adults!

Whats up with Feminism?

A.K.A Man-hating
Calm down and just read a bit more before
turning the page. Regardless if youre a guy or a
girl, you should read this.

#TheRant
For this months issue of the rant we can proudly present
Anna ranting about Feminism. Enjoy :)

Lately, labels like feminist, homophobic, mainstream, hipster, etc. are used way too often. We
all complain about labeling people but we all
do it. Firstly, the term feminism means: The
belief that women are and should be treated as
potential intellectual equals and social equals
to men. Im a believer in feminism as most
women are and believe it or not, a lot of men
are too.
Chicks thatve had their hearts broken, cheated on or generally hate any male human ARE
NOT classified as feminists. Even if they
believe in equal rights for both sexes, they
are man-haters. Ladies and gents, THIS is
man-hating. People have been confusing these
two for way too long. Please, STOP THIS.
Dudes, stop calling any chick a feminist. Shes
probably just really annoying so ignore her.
Girls, dont ignore this. Soon enough, youll
start noticing how pressured we are in society
to do certain things. Apparently Im a lesbian
for loving sports and rock. THAT is unequal.
Apparently a guy whos interested in fashion
is gay. THAT is unequal. People are sickly
convinced by society that the sexes needed to
be separated like this. For not fitting our gender stereotypes, we are labeled as different.
Back in the day, women stayed home, cared for
the kids and IF she worked, her options were
primary teacher or nurse. No woman was an
engineer, doctor or lawyer. But also, no woman was a janitor, garbage MAN or mail MAN.
In every aspect of our lives and history, both
men and women have been classified, ordered
and expected to have certain professions. This

shows how both sexes have been wrongly characterized.

Being a feminist doesnt mean you become
anti-men, cut your hair and become arrogant.
Were not joining the army or a convent. Seriously, if you believe in feminism, just understand the principles. Even if you havent
noticed it, this has become a major epidemic.
Society has brought countless problems to
individuals and the biggest concern is that its
our fault. Until women earn the same as men,
dress freely without being eye-raped and gain
as much respect in their country, we will never
be equal. Yes, women can vote, become professional footballers and be neurologists but
so what? If women today are still taking to the
streets to protest as they did in the 1800s, the
problem clearly isnt fixed. Many will still sexualize women. Many will still believe our place
is in the kitchen. Many will still ignore the fact
that Martha can actually play football better
than most of your favorite athletes. Why? Sadly,
thats what they were taught.
Im challenging you to do one thing. Think
before you speak. Before saying a sexist thing,
imagine what it would be like living in a third
world country where pre-pubescent girls are
married off and pregnant before 15. Imagine
a boy who is forced to do physical labor as a
profession because of his muscular body, disregarding his intelligence and mental potential.
Acknowledge the education youve received
and most importantly, use IT. Speak your opinions and fight for a cause you believe in.
For me, Im going to stop stereotyping guys due
to their physical appearance. How about you?

Of Sleep

Two years ago, Spain held the first annual siesta championship in which participants had to sleep for 20
minutes. Points were given based on a bizarre criterion
that considered factors such as sleeping positions or
the loudness of snore. The best sleeper was awarded a
prize of 1000 euros. The purpose of the championship
was to spread awareness on the importance and benefits of sleeping.

years of our life will be dedicated to sleeping.

Often, teachers and parents emphasize the importance

of sleep and we rarely take their advice seriously. What
is sleep? How long can we go on without sleeping?

Inadequate sleep can have significant consequences on

a teenagers emotional and physical wellbeing. It can
minimize your capacity to memorize, learn and solve
problems and poor performance is usually linked to
lack of sleep. It can also trigger restless, aggressive and
inappropriate behavior. Moreover, youll have to deal
with the pimples on your face. Research proves that the
risk of stress increases by 14% with every hour of sleep
lost, and stress can cause malfunctions in the production of acne. Furthermore, sleep is vital to development
during puberty and hormones that encourage growth
are usually released when sleeping. Sleep can also
strengthen your immune system. When
sleeping the immune system produces protective infection-fighting antibodies to
fight foreign substances and pathogens.

The National Sleep Foundation describes sleep as

something that can affect how we look, feel and perform on a daily basis, and can have a major impact on
our overall quality of life.
The sleeping requirements can depend on various
factors such as age, health and lifestyle. Newborn babies spend almost 75% of their day
(18 hours) sleeping. Teenagers usually
have to sleep more; about 9 to
10 hours a day. For adults this
decreases to around 7 or 8
hours. Calculations show
that in total humans
spend approximately
36% of their life
sleeping; which
means for a life
span of 90
years,
32

Sleep deprivation can jeopardize our mental and physical health, and are both short and long term. Inadequate sleep can not only have serious consequences on
our ability to make decisions, behavior and learning
capability, but also on health and can lead to problems
like diabetes, obesity and heart diseases.

Make sleep a priority. Think of sleep

as the food for your brain, and
keep in mind that sleep is not
a mere waste of time but an
opportunity for your body
and brain to rest and
to get prepared
for the day
ahead.

Smartphone

WARS!
By: Immanuel Joseph

2015 is here!!! Let

the smartphone
wars begin!
Here is a list of the
most anticipated
phones for this year:

Apple:
Apple iPhone 6S and 6S Plus should be here by September of this year. Expect phones that are Bigger than biggerest or BIGGER than the biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since iPhone. (If you
didnt get the reference...just buy another phone) It truly would be interesting to see how the Apple
Watch will perform with the new iPhones and against a plethora of Android watches.
Target Audience: Apple loyalists. People who are lazy to transfer their stuff from iTunes. iOS lovers (if
those sort of people even exist) People who think of the iPhone as a status symbol.
Price: approx. $649 (Ohh...what a surprise...has been the same for a long time now)
Samsung
Big year for Samsung. They just released their first Tizen phone. The new operating system gives them
an opportunity to make cheaper phones which should suffice for non geeky people and people who
are unwilling to pay the price of an arm or a leg.
Expect the same good old Samsung design, huge phones, gigantic phablets and last but not the least
all the features that the iPhone 6S will possess. On a more serious note the S6 is expected to have
Samsungs own chip instead of the new Snapdragon 810 processor. But that is not a problem considering the fact that leaked S6 Benchmark scores are the highest ever seen achieved in GeekBench from
a mobile device. For those of you who dont know what that means...the phone is fast...REALLY FAST.
Target Audience: People who hate Apple. People who love crazy specs.
Price: approx. $855 (an arm or a leg anyone?)
HTC
Things have been going good for HTC. The One M7 and its successor M8 did cause a few waves in the
tech world with their beautiful aluminium construction, only rivalled by the iPhone. So here comes the
new one for 2015...guess the
name...Hima! The logical answer might/should be the M9...but HTC has been thinking of using Hima
or maybe the Hima M9. We will have to wait see. There are also rumours that an M9 Plus is
around...now doesnt that sound oddly familiar...
Expect a top end Snapdragon 810 processor coupled with a mind boggling 20 MP camera for the M9.
The M9 plus on the other hand will have a 13 MP front facing camera...just to make all those duck
faces and selfies crystal clear.
Target Audience: Snapchat and Instagram users. People who care about phone aesthetics. People
who adore Snapdragon.
Price: approx. $649 (Are we talking about HTC or Apple)
This is just a list of 3 phones...there are a lot of amazing phones coming out this year like LG G4,
Sony Z4, the new Nexus, LG G Flex 2 (already out, should be on sale soon), Nokia Lumia and possibly
the interesting Google Project Ara.
Anybody remember BlackBerry...they are bringing a new phone too...strangely enough it is called the
BlackBerry Rio aka BlackBerry Z20.

Conclusion=Choose wisely! You have a lot of options.
