Hanging Pillar Andhra Pradesh.

The small historical village of Lepakshi is home to many ancient marvels. One of them is the
Hanging Pillar of the Lepakshi temple. Amongst the 70 pillars of the temple, one hangs without
any support! Visitors pass objects under the pillar to check if the claim is true. According to
locals, passing objects under the pillar brings prosperity to ones life.
Another legend gives the town a prominent place in the Ramayana this was where the bird
Jatayu fell, wounded after a futile battle against Ravana who was carrying away Sita. When Sri
Rama reached the spot, he saw the bird and said compassionately, Le Pakshi rise, bird in
Telugu.
Lepakshi is a small town in Anantapur district of now residuary Andhra Pradesh state. In that small town, there is a temple which is famous
for its hanging pillar. In the premises of the temple, one can see a pillar that is attached with the ceiling, but not with the floor. The pillar is at
Veerabhadra temple in this small town. It is known world over as Aakaasa Sthambha. Though it is a hanging pillar, it is not a floating one.
One can easily pass a cloth between the underside of the pillar and the floor.
Hanging Pillar
Much famed Hanging Pillar is part of a temple located in Anantapur district of residuary Andhra Pradesh. The hanging pillar does not rest on
the ground fully. In total, there are about 70 pillars at this 16th as a testimony to the engineering genius of ancient and medieval Indias temple
architects. The locals say that the hanging pillar is now slightly dislodged from its original position due to experimentation by a British
engineer. This British national tried to move it in an unsuccessful attempt. Being inquisitive, he wanted to uncover the secret of its support.

Veerabhadra Temple
Much of this temple is built on a low and rocky hill called Kurmasailam. In Telugu language, it translates to tortoise hill. This is because of the
shape of the hill. The temple dates back to 1583. It was built by two brothers Virupanna and Veeranna. They were initially in the service of the
Vijayanagar kings. According to mythology, the temple was built by the sage Agastya. It has idols of Ganesha, Nandi, Veerabhadra, Shiva,
Bhadrakali, Vishnu and Lakshmi. The temples main deity is Veerabhadra. This deity is the fiery god created by Shiva in his rage after the
Daksha Yagna and the immolation of Parvathi.
