A Critique on the
Treatment of rice straw hemicellulosic hydrolysates with
advanced oxidative processes: a new and promising detoxification
method to improve the bioconversion process Research Paper
The research paper does provide a promising method to
improve the bioconversion process. It gives a background of the
topic and the need for the research. It cites that other methods of
detoxification are already available but have disadvantages like
reduction of production of sugars. The reasons why the method
was proposed was also discussed, which answers why they chose
such method and where did it come from. There were some parts
that need improvement though like some minor grammatical
errors.
The results shown in table 2, on my opinion, were good but
lacking. I think it would have been better if only one of the factors
like UV, ozone etc. were manipulated and the others kept
constant. This would give a clearer view on the effect of each to
the reduction of the toxics. It seems that there were always two
factors manipulated. I cannot find any two arrays that have only
one factor different to the other. The results could depend due to
the two factors manipulated.
On the evaluation of the treated hydrolysate fermentability
by Pichia Stipitis, figures and labels were cited but such figures
could not be found anywhere near the discussions of the results.
They were found at the last part already which is very far from
their respective discussions. It would be tiring to readers to read
the discussion of the results than look at the results again and
again just to get a clear view. I recommend that the figures be
placed before each discussion. This allows readers to see the
results and have a clear view before the discussion instead of
description and discussion of the results which leaves readers

imagining. If not, a note could have been placed telling readers

that the figures or results are found at the last part of the article.
Overall the research paper is great. It is understandable
especially to me who has just taken up introduction
biotechnology. Discussions included what need to be included,
nothing more and nothing less.
