Rites)Gather (Introductory

Today is Ash Wednesday and we have gathered

together as part of Gods family to begin our
journey towards the joy of Easter. Lent begins
today and is our chance to come back into the
arms of our God who loves us.

Reader 2

Lent is a special time of prayer, fasting and

almsgiving. Through prayer we prepare for Easter
and Jesus resurrection.
We Gather in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen
Gathering Hymn: Change your heart Andrew
Chinn
Opening Prayer:
Jesus, you journeyed forty days in the desert
preparing to do the work of God. Be with us as we
try to follow your example everyday of our
lives. When we make mistakes, you are there to
forgive us and help us begin again, Thank you for
giving us second chances. You have blessed us
with life; you give us what we need to grow. Help
us to appreciate all that we have been given and
to encourage one another as we journey with you.
We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.

Reading/s:
Joel 2: 12-18
Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all
your heart,With fasting, with weeping, and with
mourning;Rend your hearts and not your clothing.
Return to the Lord, your God,for he is gracious
and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in
steadfast love,and relents from punishing.Who
knows whether he will not turn and relent, and
leave a blessing behind him,a grain-offering and a
drink-offeringfor the Lord, your God? Blow the
trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn
assembly; gather the people. Sanctify the
congregation; assemble the aged; gather the
children, even infants at the breast. Let the
bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her
canopy. Between the vestibule and the altar let
the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep. Let
them say, Spare your people, O Lord, and do not
make your heritage a mockery, a byword among
the nations. Why should it be said among the
peoples, Where is their God?

Gospel Acclamation:
Glory and praise to you Lord Jesus Christ
(Sung)
Glory and praise to you Lord Jesus Christ
God loved us so and sent Jesus for us
The light of the world to follow in our life
Glory and praise to you Lord Jesus Christ
Luke 4: 1-13
Narrator: Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the
Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the
wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted
by the devil. He ate nothing during those days,
and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil
said to him,
Devil: If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to
become bread.
Narrator: Jesus answered,
Jesus: It is written: Man shall not live on bread
alone.
Narrator: The devil led him up to a high place and
showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the
world. And he said to him,
Devil I will give you all their authority and
splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give
it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all
be yours.

Reader 4 and 5 to
enact the story of
Luke)

Narrator Jesus answered,

Jesus: It is written: Worship the Lord your God
and serve him only.
Narrator: The devil led him to Jerusalem and had
him stand on the highest point of the temple.
Devil: If you are the Son of God,
Narrator: he said,
Devil: throw yourself down from here. For it is
written:

Respond Refect,Share,

He will command his angels concerning you to

guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their
hands, so that you will not strike your foot against
a stone.
Narrator: Jesus answered,
Jesus: It is said: Do not put the Lord your God to
the test. Narrator: the devil had finished all this
tempting; he left him until an opportune time.
Prayer:
Loving God, we ask you to bless us, your children
as we received these ashes. We are sorry for the
times we have turned away from you. We want to
show you how sad our hearts are and feel the joy
of your forgiveness. Walk with us through the
season of Lent and lead us to the new life of
Easter. Amen
Refection:
Throughout the reading, we hear of times that
Jesus was tempted by the Devil. Jesus was not
selfish, he trusted in Gods word. We can be
reminded of times that we have been selfish or
tempted by things that are not in our best
interest. As we receive the ashes, we are
reminded of our invitation to repent and turn
away from the selfishness to the promise of a new
life. We look to God, through prayer we ask for the
strength to become better and more
compassionate people.

Action:
On the promise card, you are going to think of a
Lenten promise that you will make and keep
throughout the season. With this promise, you are
making a commitment to change and become
closer to God.
Everyone will now come forward to be marked
with the ashes in the sign of the cross on their
foreheads.
