Undamped/Damped free vibrations

Like with particles, many problems with rigid bodies consider motion
that is periodic, in other words body repeats its path in a definite period of
time. Such type of motion is called vibration.
Vibrations can be categorized as:
Free
Forced
Free vibrations are produced and maintained by forces such as elastic and
gravitational (which depend only on the position and motion of the body)
Forced vibrations are produced and maintained by an externally applied
periodic force, which does not depend on position/motion of the body.
Damped vs Undamped.
When forces (friction, air/liquid resistance, etc), that oppose the restoring
force are negligible, vibrations are called undamped. When they are not
negligible they are called damped.
Free undamped vibration will repeat itself indefinitely, free damped
vibration die out.

Example 5
Derive the differential equation for small oscillations of the springloaded pendulum and find the period . The equilibrium position is
vertical as shown. The mass of the rod is negligible.

Example 6
Two blocks hang in a vertical plane from a massless bar, which is horizontal
in the equilibrium position. If the springs remain in tension at all times, write
the differential equation of motion for y(t), the position of the 10-lb block,
and determine the frequency and period of the resulting vibratory motion.
(Assume small oscillations)
