INTILLEGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS (ITS)
Introduction
Mobility has become a basic necessity of modern times, it is being met by increasing use of private
cars which in turn has burdened the transport infrastructure causing never-ending congestion and
traffic jams particularly in urban areas, many urban planning authority have suggested policies and
measures to check this almost insatiable demand for mobility with the need to reduce traffic jams,
protect the environment and ensure safe & efficient system of transport. Among them is the concept of
Intelligent transport system (ITS) which is capable of opening up new ways of achieving sustainable
mobility in our communication and information society. Acceptance of Intelligent transport system
(ITS) is at critical stage and transportation professionals need to gain an understanding and
appreciation of its capabilities and opportunities for successful operation.
Interest in ITS comes from the problems caused by traffic congestion and a synergy of new
information technology for simulation, real-time control, and communications networks.
