Personal Teaching Philosophy: The Three Fs


Although there are many complicated elements that one can incorporate into
a teaching philosophy, mine can be simply summarized with Phillips Three Fs:
Fairness, Flexibility, and Fulfillment. Each one of these areas is a key to ensure
that learners are engage and enjoy being a member learning in a virtual classroom.


As a graduate student in the eLearning track at the University of Central
Florida, it is my primary responsibility to see that learners are fairly treated while
participating in an online course. Fairness represents an equitable amount of
participation time amongst all students and that good ethics are adhered to at all
times. Fairness also applies to my treatment toward all learners and other members
in my profession.


Flexibility is another key component to successful teaching. By being flexible,
I will be open-minded to different learning styles and theories and adjust an online
course or instruction to the external circumstances surrounding me. If technology
impacts our assignments or instruction, I will be flexible and move an assignment to
a new due date without sacrificing the quality of the learning experience. If learners
cannot make it to an online class meeting, I will record and archive all online class
meetings to ensure proper continuation of online learning. Flexibility can also carry
over to individual learners attention and listening to their feedback and opinions.
An open door policy is great to have as an online instructor and be available to my
learners in a timely manner.


Most importantly, the learners who I teach should enjoy what they are doing
and that I am fulfilling their need to learn. I want to ensure that the students I come
in to contact with online have that good feeling last by promoting camaraderie and
light heartedness when approaching my teaching style. While it is good to be fun
as a teacher, it is important to be fulfilling the needs of your learners. By fulfilling
the needs of my learners through fun online learning, it is important that my
learning style needs to be meaningful.


Using Phillips Three Fs I will be able to ensure a consistently fun, safe,
and motivating experience as a teacher. Even if circumstances arent always perfect,
I will stick to the base values of Fairness, Flexibility, and Fulfillment to provide
the guidance and decision making that my learners need to enjoy and improve the
virtual learning environment that they are participating in.
