VASSANJI
TEXTUAL EVIDENCE
To achieve his dream of studying abroad, Aloo took
the trouble to write to universities in America to get
the necessary information. Despite it took him a
few months, he was determined to know as much
as he could. Finally, he succeeded in getting
satisfying reply to his efforts. He even earned
himself a place at the California Institute of
Technology.
Initially, they owned a store in Uhuru Street in town
but mother decided to sell off the store and moved
the children to Upanga, a quieter place of town. It
was a lonely and frightening place and she felt
lonely sometimes because at their former place,
she had friends. However, the new house was in a
quiet area with a better environment for her
children to study.
Mother was initially against letting Aloo go to study
abroad. She believed that he will not return to her
after his studies. Apart from fearing of losing Aloo,
mother was also concerned about their financial
problem. However, later, she realized that she
should give Aloo the chance to get a better
education and she even made a loan for Aloos
spending money.
Aloo stood up to his believe despite being
disagreed by mother. Aloo felt that he should be
allowed to accept the scholarship and study
overseas. He promised to work his way through
college to repay the loan and to not let his mother
down.
