TECHNOLOGY LESSON PLAN
Title: Tech Creations Using Regular and Irregular Past Tense Verbs
Time: 60 minutes
Context
This lesson plan was created for a beginner level General English adult ESL class.
The class meets three times per week for sixty minute sessions. There are eight
females and five males in the class. Most of the students have recently immigrated
to the United States or are here temporarily for professional purposes. Students
come from a variety of different L1 backgrounds. The classroom is equipped with a
projector and interactive whiteboards. All of the students have smartphones or
iPads which they can use in class and have expressed a high comfort level using
technology in the classroom.
Outcomes
Students will be able to identify the correct past tense verb form of multiple
high frequency verbs in a multiple choice quiz format.
Students will be able to create a short presentation and communicate five
activities from the previous week using the simple past.
Students will be able to produce a short film describing their favorite memory
using at least three different past simple verbs.
Assumptions

Students were introduced to past tense regular and irregular verbs and given

the basic production information in the previous class.

Students are familiar with Google Slides and how to collaborate at home on
Google Drive.

Key Technology
1. Kahoot: Kahoot will be used as a warm-up in order to get students interested
and motivated for the class material as well as the review the correct form of
regular past tense verbs and high frequency irregular past tense verbs.
Kahoot is a highly engaging and visually appealing quiz generator which
allows the students to compete amongst themselves and therefore creates
excitement and energy within the classroom. The teacher see how many
students get each question right and wrong so that they know whether or not
some of the material needs to be reviewed before proceeding with the
remaining class activities. The instructor will need to create a Kahoot
account in order to access the quiz.
2. Google Slides: Students will collaborate with pairs and use Google Slides to
create short presentation of activities that they completed in the prior week.
Google Slides is used as a fun and engaging way to allow the students to
create something and use regular and irregular past tense verbs in an
authentic context. Students will also be able to share with their classmates
about activities they complete during the week. Google Slides is a great tool
because students can create visually appealing and modern short
presentations and easily integrate pictures or videos from their photo
libraries or from the web. Google Slides is also easy to navigate, very user

friendly and enables students to collaborate and continue working on the
project together or independently at home. It is also easy to share the final
project on social media or directly through invitation. The aspect of
collaboration and creation allows students to use the past simple in an
authentic way and encourages communication.
3. Perfect Video: Students will work in groups of three in order to create short
videos describing an important memory using the past tense. Perfect video is
an excellent app for this type of project because its very easy and
straightforward for students to edit video, add photos, subtitles, custom text
and background music. It is also very easy to export videos to different social
media sites in order to share the videos with classmates or the community.
Lesson
Warm-up: Students will compete in a classroom Kahoot quiz. The teacher should
begin by asking each of the students to open their web browsers and go to
Kahoot.it. Then the teacher should provide the access code to the students and ask
each of the students to join the quiz and enter their names. The teacher will then
begin the quiz and ask each of the students to submit their answers to each of the
question. Use the leaderboard in order to encourage competition between the
students. The teacher should also review the right answer after each question and
look at the percentage of students which got each question wrong to decide if any
of the material needs to be reviewed prior to the remaining class activities. (15
minutes)
Short Presentation Activity: The teacher should tell students that they will create a
simple, short presentation using Google Slides and share the presentation with their
classmates. The teacher should first show an example presentation (Appendix B).

5
TECHNOLOGY LESSON PLAN
Next the teacher should put the students in to pairs and tell them to first write down
five activities that they completed in the past week using complete sentences.
Some examples could be I went shopping at the mall, I played in a basketball game
or I cooked dinner for my friends. Then the teacher should instruct the students to
create a Google Slides presentation in order to display the activities of the two
partners and make it visually appealing by using color, design, transitions and
pictures. Students should be instructed that they will be placing the link to their
presentations on social media (Edmodo in this case) and that their classmates will
provide feedback and questions and the teacher will also provide feedback.
Students will be given 20 minutes of class time to create the presentation and then
they will be asked to finish working on their projects at home with the opportunity to
collaborate with their partner through Google and post the presentation after it is
finalized. (20 minutes)
Perfect Video Activity: Students will create a short video in groups of three
discussing a favorite memory using at least three past tense verbs per person. The
teacher should first put students in to groups of three and then ask each member of
the group to write a short response about their favorite memory using at least three
past tense verbs. The students should each film each other sharing their favorite
memory and then have the students edit the video together and add any creative
features such as music, text or pictures using the Perfect Video app. Students will
also be instructed to post their videos to the class website (Edmodo) so that the
other students and the teacher can provide feedback. (20 minutes)
Wrap-up: The teacher should instruct each of the students to go to the Edmodo
website (or other social media site used for the class) and look at the presentations
and videos of the other groups in the class. Each student should respond with

feedback or question to one of the other presentations and one of the other class
videos on the website for homework. (5 minutes)
