Rick Taira
Upper School Teacher
My name is Rick Taira and I am a
U.S. citizen. I was originally born in
Miami, Florida, but I grew up in Los
Angeles. Shortly after high school
graduation, I moved to New York.
From New York I moved to Taiwan
where I lived for 17 years. In 2011, I
returned to America and have been
living and teaching here.
I have been a life-long learner and
my studies have covered a wide
range of subjects. The first degree I
earned was from Columbia
University in New York. I received a
BA in Urban Studies and continued
on to pursue a Master of Social Work
(MSW). In 1994, I headed to Taiwan
and started teaching ESL courses.
Feeling the need to develop
professionally, I studied for and
received a second masters degree in
the field of Applied Linguistics
(MApling). When I returned to the
U.S. in 2011, I decided to continue
my academic pursuits and applied to
the Master in Teaching program at
B a r d
College.

profession for the
past twenty years.
My first teaching
assignments were
i n Ta i w a n . I
taught English as
a second language and worked with a
range of students from elementary to
college-level. Though I started out
with TPR and other antiquated
approaches to language instruction,
my mainstay has been
communicative methods in the
classroom. When I returned to the
U.S., I had the opportunity to expand
my pedagogical knowledge and add
to my instructional interventions.
This year I had the unique
circumstance of being charged with
teaching Mandarin and English
language arts.
