Attention Grabber: Gr. 10s
today I want you to be able to
recall that increased flexibility
leads to increased potential
performance. These stretches
will prepare us for todays
exciting resistance training! We
are also going to discuss the
roles of P.E. teacher and
Coach; are the differences?
Prior Knowledge: Observe
prior to stretch for KTPs.
Reminder from last class
Learning/Behaviour:
Students are expected to follow
along physically with the
instructors motions while
following along mentally and
verbally with the discussion
Advance Organizer: PE PofS,

Reflection: I think the stretch session went rather well. I decided to have the students remain
where they were for the warmup, since they were spread out enough they could all see and had
ample room to stretch. Besides, almost everyone else has used the 3-point line and I wanted to be
different. I got a lot of the answers I was expecting from the group, which isnt necessarily a bad
thing, but the article I had put up on Moodle I thought would cause more controversy than it did.
I chose the article specifically to get people talking, but the students hardly referenced the article
at all. Which means they either didnt read it, or more surprisingly, agreed with the article. I
doubt that is the case, since the article was chosen as a devils advocate piece. I personally
didnt agree with it, but I find sometimes that makes for the best place to start a discussion. That
said, I do believe the students understood that the line between teacher and coach is often times
blurred, especially in schools where teachers often are also coaches. Speaking as a martial arts
instructor, I have a pretty big opinion on the lines between coach and teacher, as I was often
referred to by parents as their childs martial arts coach, when in fact I was their instructor. I hold
a special affinity for both roles, but do think they are separate in many ways. However, I tried not
to let my opinion of the topic guide the conversation, as I saw my role more as a facilitator to
discussion. It would have been more of a soapbox if I had just spouted my opinion. I was
pleasantly surprised with how many people (different people I should say) answered up during
the discussion, as its been my experience in other stretch discussion that there is a core group of
students who talk, and a silent majority that just listen. It was good to see a few of those students
step out of their shells a little. As for the stretches themselves, I chose a slight variation of a
stretching routine I designed for some of my students who got into weight training during their
martial arts careers. Going top to bottom, working major muscles groups, more to lubricate and
ready the joints and muscles, rather than improving flexibility. Typically in my martial arts
classes, I would do similar stretches as well at the beginning of class, usually right after the
warm up, then as a cool down at the end of class, we would focus on stretches that improved
flexibility. This is what I would have done had I had the group for a full class. I was pretty right
on for time, I had planned 6 minutes of material, and was almost right on the 6 minute mark
(according to my stopwatch). As for what could be improved on, I would say having the students
respond more to the controversy of the article I posted.
