CONTENT

Use English language newspapers produced


for the local community if you are teaching
in a country where English is not an official
language. (culturally appropriate)

Allow learners to select an article that


interests them, work on it and report back
to other learners.

CLARITY
Reports on newspapers are usually clear
and detailed.
Languages used are very accurate and are
usually error free.

ACCESSIBILITY
Very easy to obtain (almost just anywhere)
Even old newspapers can do.

PRACTICALITY
Considered student centered learning.
Students get to choose their favourite
newspaper article and then complete task
given by the teacher
For example, Scavenger Hunt where
students were asked to look for specific
classes of words from the text. (verb,
adjective, preposition, adverb, noun)

VERSATILITY
Can be adapted to many different activities
For example :
word search, summarizing articles, silent
reading

COST EFFECTIVENESS
Very cheap
Can even reuse old newspaper

DURABILITY

Not really unless you laminate it

IMPACT
Instill the habit of reading newspaper
outside the school compound. (at home,
library)
Reading is a great way of acquiring
language
Students reading skills, writing skills and
vocabulary will improve.

AUTHENTICITY

Newspapers are authentic because its


related to our everyday life. (issues,
happenings)
