Lesson 2

Going back to basics #2 Division

Lesson Overview: In this lesson students will work on basic division skills by solving equations
that use only single digit divisors. This allows a good review and practice to work the students
into harder equations. With a review and practice, the students will gradually solve harder
equations. These equations will consist of double digit divisors with no remainders. All
problems for this lesson must divide equally as the order of operation equations the students will
solve at the end of the unit will all divide equally. There will be one assessment consisting of 35
single digit divisors division problems on Schoology. These problems will be consistent with
what the students will see in order of operation equations in 5th grade.

Materials Needed:

iPad
Promethean White Board
Doceri
Worksheet #3 Division

Learning Objective:
Students will know the rules and procedures to solve a single digit divisor division equation. The
students will be able to answer the equations with an 80% accuracy when given a variety of
problems. Students will also be challenged to solve double digit divisors equations at a 80%
accuracy rate. Both types of division equations will have no remainders as part of the answer.

Time: One class lesson (80 Minutes)

Classroom set-up: Students will be in their standard team of 5s. Each group facing the front of
the room.

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity

Students will be given a real world division problem that interests them. You and 2 friends buy
18 candy bars, how many candy bars will each of you get? With this prompt you will ask the
students how they solved this problem. The teacher will then have a student come to the Smart
board and show how they found the answer using mathematical procedures. Based on the
students response and answers to your questioning you can either do a few more problems or
move on.

Step 2: Content Presentation

1) Using the problems from step 1, the teacher will go over the rules of division. The
teacher will write out the problem and go over the steps to solve.
1) Can the divisor go into the first digit?
2) If yes, how many times?
3) Multiply that number with the divisor and subtract from the divided number.
4) Bring down the next digit and repeat the process.
2) Using the interactive board, the teacher will put up a variety of single digit divisors
problems (134/2),(189/9),(1611/3) and have the students use their iPads as a white board
and solve the problems. The teacher will use observation as a formative assessment as the
students hold up their answers.
3) After each problem is solved the teacher will pick a student to come to the Smart board
and solve the problem using the appropriate steps.
4) Repeating steps 1-3 the teacher will add in double digit divisors (142/12), (26195/13).
For this step the teacher can choose to let the students solve the problems in pairs. Using
partners will promote student collaboration and make the students responsible for their
own learning.
5) Once the students show an understanding of division and the rules it takes to solve single
and double digit divisors the teacher can assign the lesson worksheet to be completed in
Schoology.

Step 3: Learner Participation

1) Students will use their iPads to complete the division worksheet. The worksheet will be
on Schoology (LMS) which will provide instant feedback and a score once completed.
2) At all times the teacher will be at the back table to offer help and extra instruction to any
student who does not understand or is stuck.
Step 4: Assessment
1) With the students using Schoology they will be able to get a score instantly from the
worksheets they completed.
2) Using the feedback and score the students must go back and resolve any problem they
missed to achieve the 80% goal.
3) The students will check off their completed worksheets with an 80% score to the teacher.
4) If 80% or higher is achieved and there is still time left, students can log onto Khan
Academy and work on 5th grade division problems.

Step 5: Follow Through Activities

Students will be required to pass off problems as exit tickets throughout the day. Each time the
students go to a special like computers, library, lunch, or recess the students will be required to
answer a division problem to leave. This allows the teacher to assess each student on an
individual basis and requires the student to possess the skills to solve random equations.
