Competition Rules

Rockets

Rockets are made from a maximum of

three soft drink bottles, with additional
material to make a nose cone, fins, payload. No multi-stage, booster or cluster
rockets are allowed.

The nose is be blunt, not sharp, for safety

reasons.

Rockets can be made on or before the

day. (The morning session is dedicated to
helping participants make and test their
rockets.)

Each competitor may make as many rockets as they wish but will be given a limited
time period to launch the rockets. Time is
dependent on the number of entries but is
likely to be two five-minute periods for
each competition (target and distance).

Rockets may be constructed on or before

the competition day.

Rockets can be pressurised to a maximum

of 100psi, and no more. Lower pressures
are likely to achieve better results in the
target competition.

Rockets must only be made of nonmetallic materials.

The competition may be postponed if the

organisers deem that the weather conditions, such as wind or rain, are unsuitable.

Safety glasses or goggles are worn in the

launch area

Launch Pads

Competitors may supply their own launch

pads and pumps but some will be available on the day. The style being used allows a standard soft drink bottle to slid
neatly over a PVC pipe. The quality of the
launch pads and pumps is not guaranteed.

Launch pads can only be pressurised by a

hand or foot pump (no air compressors
allowed).

Range Procedures

Each competitor will be allocated a

launch time and area. It is up to the
competitor to be at the right place at
the right time.

Using a system of whistles, competitors

will be able to fire their rockets when
instructed and when the range is safe.

Nobody is allowed onto the live range

unless given approval by the Range
Marshalls.

Target Competition

The object of this competition is for the

water rocket to fired and then land as
close to a target as possible. The target
is 60 metres from the launch area.
Distances are measured from the centre
of the target. Trophies are presented for
each age group.

The judges decision is final.

Distance Competition

The object of this competition is for the

water rocket to be fired and then land
as far from the launch area as possible.
Distances are measured from the line
across the front of the launch area.
Trophies are presented for each age
group.

The judges decision is final.

Participation

The construction and launch of the water rockets should be by individuals;

however, guidance and assistance is
allowed, including the help of adults
with young children.

Prizes are awarded to individuals, not

teams or groups.
