Check-In
Silently think of one word to describe how you
are feeling.
Share this word with your group. The person
who got up the earliest this morning will start.

Case Studies
Each group will discuss 1 of the scenarios below. Decide what you think is an appropriate response from the
teacher.
1) You create new seats for your class. At some point in the period you hear a student say to another, She
[the teacher] doesnt let the black kids sit together. The conversation does not seem to continue.
2) Students choose their own groups for the day. They sit only with students of their same race. Towards the
end of the period, a student notices and draws the class attention to this fact.
3) A student asks you if they can plug in their Ipad because the power has been turned off in their house.
4) You create new seats for students. A student pulls you aside and says, I dont get along with so-and-so
because they smell. I cant sit with them.
5) You notice a student not working with their group. You ask whats wrong. The student says, They are
speaking in Spanish and I dont speak Spanish.

Reflection acknowledgements
I want to acknowledge the different reflections Ive received, so far, for Moule chs 3
& 4. The reactions have been mixed ranging from acceptance, guilt, to anger, all of
which are completely normal. Before we go into our small group discussion, I want to
remind you about the class objective #1 which is to examine his or her ethno-centric
and socio-economic perspective to develop diversity consciousness and sensitivity. In
other words you are expected to be metacognitive, to think about your thinking. Im
happy to say, your journals seem to reflect this, even if its not easy.
I want to show a video that addresses a parallel issue where people had to become
conscious of something that was considered acceptable to say.

Teaching note
Sentences frames can be used in any class. Its
an important developmental step for students to
talk about what they are learning and use the
correct vocabulary.
ex: If f(x) = 4x then f (x) = 4 because the
instantaneous rate of change of 4x is 4.

Parents who did poorly in school themselves may have a negative attitude about their
