Field Trip Assignment
For our field trip assignment we have chosen to go to the Surrey Nature Center (SNC). The
grade we will be focusing on is grade 3 and the subjects we would like to include are Math, LA,
science and Art.
Learning Outcomes are: Compare familiar plants according to similarities and differences in
appearance and life cycles.
Leading up to the trip we will: Go over behaviour expectations of the students while we are at
Surrey Nature Center. Go over what will happen is a student(s) misbehave while on the field
trip.
Teacher will give students a Question to think about while on the field trip: Question will be,
Look at the trees at the SNC and compare them with the ones we have seen on our nature walks.
Draw a picture, write the name of the tree or describe the tree (color, size, shape, smell) and then
record your information to report back to the class.
Dayplan for field trip: Students will arrive by car with parent volunteer drivers to SNC. There
we will go into the building and have a short tour of where the lunch room area is, bathroom and
where the students can leave their belongings. The students will be introduced to the SNC
leaders. SNC leaders will tell students what the shape of the day looks like.
Then they will go into more detail about what each of the activities they will be doing.
After leaders explain what will be happening during the field trip students will be divided into
two groups. (Teacher will have groups already picked out) Half the students will go with one
leader the other half with the other leader. Teacher and EA will divide where appropriate
depending on who is which group.
After morning activity of the nature walk and walking through the forest learning about trees,
leaves and surviving in nature students will be asked to participate in many activities to reinforce
this learning. All the activities are provided by the SNC leaders. After students have completed
all activities they go back to the center and have lunch.
Lunch and bathroom break
After lunch the 2nd half of the day will involve looking more closely at certain specimens of
plants. Students are in two groups again with two different leaders. Students are given
microscopes to look more closely at plants. Again, activities are provided by SNC staff to
reinforce the students learning. After the second activity is completed the class then joins back
together to play some outdoor games lead by the SNC staff.
Students then meet back at the Center for a head count and get ready to depart back to school,
this will happen at 1:15 so that students are back in time for end of the day.
What will we do teach/ following the trip:
Worksheets, graphic organizers, rubrics
